Windows 8 Sales Allegedly Below Projections

Posted on Monday, November 19 @ 12:49:31 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

There hasn't been a whole lot of love for Microsoft's new operating system as of late, and it looks like all of the negativity has directly affected sales, as a new report suggests that Windows 8 has failed to find the success Microsoft was expecting.

According to Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows (via GameSpot), a "trusted source at Microsoft" has said that the sales of Windows 8 were not only described as being "disappointing" but also "well below Microsoft's internal projections."

As far as we know right now, Microsoft has sold a total of 4 million copies of the operating system. Let's also not forget that the company's new line of Surface tablets just recently launched with the software as well.

Have you purchased Windows 8? If so, let us know what you think of the new OS thus far and whether or not you think it will have any major impact on the future of PC gaming.

I might go for the trifecta and see if using a Surface, WP, and Windows 8 PC is as streamlined as Windows claims. I'm waiting for a good sale price on a Surface tablet right now, and I'll get a new laptop when my scholarship overages hit. I'm scurred of the unknown...

I'd wait on getting the Surface until the actual Windows 8 version is out. I hear currently the Surface uses Windows RT, which from what I hear is a different OS that works similarly, but isn't a true Windows OS and can't run x86 programs, only Windows Store apps. It's essentially the Windows Phone OS but for tablets.

I want the Windows 8 version of Surface so I can run older programs on it. PC games, emulators, maybe some D&D tools. I definitely want the Surface for reading all my scanned D&D books at least.

Judging by the tech demos, and a friend that got hands-on time (he's a business consultant with AT&T), it's a pretty streamlined, highly capable tablet. Plus I hate Apple, so there's that.

But he alerted me to the RT bullshit after the product rep was showing off the Surface RT and the Surface with Win8. Thank gawd, crisis averted.

I also hate apple. While I don't "like" MS I feel they are tolerable since I'm not about to play diablo on a linux box. The ipad is actually the one apple product i'd actually consider owning, though. Hopefully your amigo is right and I can someday get a tablet that doesn't reek of vintage cardigans and smugness.

I haven't gotten it yet, but if I build a new system soon (and there's a fair chance I will), I will definitely get Windows 8 for it. I've actually heard some pretty good things about it. Folks are saying that you can make it work pretty much exactly like Windows 7, because the start menu is apparently very easy to customize.

This isn't much of a surprise. Windows 8 is plagued with horrible design decisions that would make any existing PC user feel out of place and awkward.

The only thing that really interests me out of Win8 is the announced i5 Surface Tablets. Should be able to play some cool games on it.

As I might have to replace my motherboard soon, I may need a new OS (not sure though), and I'd rather buy Windows 7 again than this thing.

Why yes, of course. I'm as excited for it as a catholic priest is to meet the new altar boy.....NOT! Taking Win7 and slapping Xbox dashboard over it, does not a new OS make.

Windows hasn't been on the ball since 3.1. I still remember those 10+ grey disks just to install win95... Which was also a leap into crap.

After pretty much the entire population of the internet scorned Windows 8 has a steaming pile of terrible design and piss poor interface, I don't see how they ever thought it was going to sell well. I'm shocked that it's up to four million already. I'd be willing to bet a large portion of those sales come from having it preloaded on new computers.

Many people don't realize that windows is at the top of the heap, not by choice, but by ramming their way in. The PC explosion of the mid 90's helped cement that. Compaq, dell, etc practically shoved it into our faces

I don't know how the industry works, but I'm under the impression that that's 4 million sold to places like Best Buy, not to folks like you and I.

If I gave a sh!t about a tablet it would be an alright OS. I haven't had hands on with it, but so far it seems like it's built around touch, and my giant Samsung TV doesn't have a touch screen.

I'll stick with the devil's Vista 64 for now.

Bring back the start button Microsoft. W8 sells a replacement for $5 that does the same but people don't want to pay some other company $5 for something that has come with windows since 95.
