Xbox 360 Used More For Music And Videos Than Gaming

Posted on Tuesday, March 27 @ 23:58:16 Eastern by

Nevermind that the Xbox 360 ws created to primarily play video games. Now it's used more for music and video apps. That's the word from Microsoft's Yusuf Mehdi, speaking with the LA Times:

What we're seeing is that people are turning on the Xbox to play games and then keeping it on afterwards to get other types of entertainment.

The story goes on to detail that the games (and more) are played an average of 84 hours a month on Xbox Live. For perspective, the average household watches roughly 150 hours of TV each month.

I don't have cable or satelite, so my entertainment is generally streamed through my consoles. With services like Netflix and Hulu Plus on the 360 and PS3, I think the trend will continue in a similar direction.

It was actually not meant primarily for gaming. Their original intention was a family entertainment system. So, it has become exactly what they wanted it to be when they began the development project. I haven't played my 360 in any meaningful way in about 2 years. No more consoles for me until they bring forth virtual reality.

And the fact they changed it to Xbox 360 entertainment system and not video game console. I, like Dan, also don't have cable or satelite. I usually go on Comcast's site and watch TV series from there or any other site that offers full shows. I should buy a Netflix account, but I don't think I'll use it much.

BTW - When do actually go on my 360, it's only used for gaming. Never anything else. I use my PS3 for movies and Netflix, but that's mostly because that's what I have hooked up to my receiver and surround sound.

I find that more and more, I'm not using either of them. I've even been playing the Wii more than the PS3 and 360. I don't know what's happening to me. I'm just so FN bored with this generation. Everything about it. The games, the UIs, the networks... yawn.

I'm sort of feeling what you're feeling. I barely play video games. It's most likely due to the fact I'm working an overnight shift and I need my sleep or else I'll drag all...night...long. Anyways, I bought the Kinect, but I haven't been playing too much of it, because I'm temporarily living with my dad (still) in his small apartment. I do have the Nyko lens, which gives us more room. It works as long as don't scratch the lens and/or line the lens up correctly.

Anyways, I'm bored with my video games. I continue to buy them, but my backlog is huge. I haven't even bought Skyrim, yet. Instead, restless UghRochester goes and pre-orders Kinect Star Wars. The game looks garbage, but I'm sure it's going to be fun *wink.* I've been mainly talking about them more than playing them if that makes sense. I'm also been wondering about stupid stuff as you can tell from my tweets.

    I think if have ADHD.

I don't have cable or satelite either, so my entertainment is all from my PC. It is my TV, DVD, Internet portal, and gaming system. (finally got my new one up and running again)

Yeah, I've spent more time watching stuff off a flashdrive than playing games.

I've been having more fun with old games lately, like Baldurs Gate 1/2 pc or KOTOR2 xbox. After I finish those I'll probably move onto Icewind Dale and Neverwinter Nights. I watch Netflix via sexbox when I'm bored of every other game I have, which is quite often. Borderlands 2 and Darksider 2 needs to hurry the eff up.

I guess the trend indicates old school bioware > current gen bioware. I think I've played more baldurs gate in the last week or 2 than I have ME2 as a whole.

I mostly game on the weekends, now, but every night Netflix is running off my PS3. Hour-wise it's probably 2-1 in favor of Movies/TV vs. Gaming on the PS3 in the past few months.
