Xbox 720 Codenamed Loop; First Info on Hardware, Price, More

Posted on Tuesday, November 8 @ 07:41:34 Eastern by

We know for sure an Xbox 360 successor is coming, but that's about it. The codename, the features, the specs - everything about the hardware itself is a big unknown at this point. But a new rumor from MS Nerd, who usually has the inside scoop on all things Microsoft, has leaked some new details that could shed some light as to what the next Xbox is all about.

It's not called the Xbox "Next" as previously reported. It's currently codenamed Xbox "Loop" and runs on a modified Windows 9 core. The hardware will be a "Zune HD-like" platform with a main processer, as well as "mulitple assistive cores" for things like graphics, AI, physics, sound, networking, and more.

It'll be much smaller that the current Xbox 360, and they're aiming for it to be cheaper, too, to further encourage Kinect adoption

These details lead me to believe that the next Xbox is currently in the very early stages of planning, and things like RAM, processor speeds, etc. haven't yet been decided. It's looking more and more like a 2013 release.

Too early. If it's going to be considered a next gen "entertainment system," then I would hope it would be released for 2014. I'm hoping for more games to run on 1080p rather 720p.

Release date has nothing do with power, the rate at which technology evolves is outstanding. It can easily be next gen at 2013, as easily as it could be if it released this year.

Honestly I hope they go past 1080p and allow much higher resolutions. 1080p is kind of holding back where we really are because of the whole HD movies and television push.

I've gotta disagree with you there. We're only just barely reaching a reasonable penetration of HD T.V's so that it can actually be considered a standard. It's one thing for PC games to move passed 1080p. Computer monitors are a completely different breed of screen but it's another thing entirely for a T.V. screen.
Additionally, huge costs are being sunk into making things prettier and not necessarily better. Why dump a whole bunch of money into something that can only be utilized by a small section of your market? 3D is a big enough money pit. 1080p is more than good enough for the next generation. Lets push that to the limit and then when the market is ready to move to more badass T.V.'s, then look passed 1080p.
Bleeding edge visuals (in terms of raw resolution) should be left to the PC. Consistent and accessible prettiness is for the consoles.

I'm not saying get rid of 1080p... that should be at least the standard. I'm saying also include those other resolutions on the 360 version. I personally know several people who play their 360/ps3/whatever on their computer monitor but have to play with black lines because their resolution isn't supported.

Well, no they're not going to discard 1080p, but it should be the standard for now. I gotta say, I know very very few people that use a computer monitor for their console gaming needs. Those gamers, I would say, are a very small minority. I think it's more common these days for people to use their T.V. as a computer monitor instead.
Planning to push the next development cycle passed 1080p seems like waste of resources at this moment. Getting all the publishers up to 1080p while the market catches up seems like the most prudent business move rather than pushing the system up to a yet-to-be-determined standard of resolution for gaming.
Plus, if the system is powerful enough, chances are a firmware update could handle a new standard at a later date - but we don't have one for Television yet.

If it wont dispense an unlimited amount of beer (or inject alcohol directly into my blood stream) while I play, I'm not going to be interested.

Good point. How about a robot that pops out of the Xbox and fetches beers from the fridge. Just say Xbox "Beer Me". Then maybe the Kinect integration may actually have a use.

That still wouldn't work. The Kinect isn't all that good on sensors. So, that beer may get spilled on you.

At any rate, the "Loop" graphic in the picture above looks kinda cool.
