LATEST FEATURES Being A Console Is Actually Xbox One's Worst Asset
Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

I wasn't allowed to talk about the new Infinity Ward game last week when I met with Activision, and I don't have much to say now that Xbox One spilled the beans.

Xbox Dashboard Update Rolls Out Today

Posted on Tuesday, October 16 @ 09:45:40 Eastern by Keri_Honea

Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb annouced on his blog late last night (late for us CST people) that the new Xbox Dashboard update will start to roll across Xbox accounts today. Your account could update today, it could update by the end of the week. To ensure stability across Xbox Live access and the new Dashboard itself, they're trickling out the update instead of slamming it all at once.

The update will include the following new features:
  • Refreshed Xbox 360 Dashboard. We’ve updated the UI with a few things, including an updated layout with more tiles, a combined TV & Movies channel and, in the US, a Sports destination.
  • Internet Explorer for Xbox. With Internet Explorer on Xbox, you can easily find and view internet content on the biggest screen in the house, including HTML5 videos.
  • Recommendations and Ratings. Recommendations will allow you to discover new favorites, generated based on a number of variables including the content you previously viewed, what your friends are consuming and what is most relevant and popular with our Xbox community. You can now rate content yourself and also see Rotten Tomatoes ratings.
  • Pinning. Pinning lets you personalize the dashboard by saving your favorite movies, TV shows, games, music, videos and websites right to the home screen. It’s as easy as opening an app or a favorite movie and clicking “pin.”
  • Xbox Video. Formerly called Zune Video Marketplace, Xbox Video offers hundreds of thousands of TV shows and movies for buying or renting in instant HD streaming.
  • Recent. Previously called Quick Play, the Recent view gives you a list of movies, games, apps or other types of content that you most recently accessed on the console.
  • Enhanced Search. The last Xbox LIVE update brought Bing voice search to Xbox so you could use voice to search for movies, TV shows, actors, directors and artists. This year we added genre search to the list, so now you can search for action, comedy, romance, drama or sci-fi. Bing voice search now includes results for video across the Web, including YouTube.
  • International Expansion of Voice Search. We’ve expanded our Kinect voice search capabilities to 9 new countries – Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Italy, Spain, Austria, and Ireland.
I'm liking the idea of the Recent feature and the ability to pin favorites to the dashboard, but I have to laugh at the inclusion of Internet Explorer. Since I only use IE on my PC to download Firefox and Chrome, can I use it to do the same thing here?

But as a whole, I haven't liked this last Dashboard update, so I'm hopeful that this one will have some real improvements. I'm sure this will be like any Facebook update and create lots of grumblings and whining initially, which will stave off as people get used to the new layout and setup.

There is no SmartGlass inclusion so far, as they are waiting for Windows 8's launch on October 26th.

I don't like this update at all. Everything feels so cramped as you see from the screenshot above. This basically was just an update to install Internet Explorer. IE doesn't even support flash and you can't install on your Xbox 360 (at least for my old Xbox Arcade edition). Another thing I don't like is it displaying your email address in the top right corner near your gamer picture. You can change that display, so it won't show, but I forget how.

I was hoping you can tell your Xbox 360 "[insert site here]" and it would go to the site. Nope, instead your Kinect only does the webhub. This update isn't that great.

I know that flash contains a lot of viruses or so I've heard. They probably don't want Xbox to get virus essentially it is a computer. That's just my guess

Agreed, I miss the folder layout where everything was clean and simple and picking a game was like selecting a name from a list instead of having a barrage of little windows to choose from

yeah, i enjoyed it as well...

    but... its never coming back...

so as far as this update is concerned, i have no problem with it... its really not much different than the dashboard we already had... and i actually like the web browser... i dont have a computer in my room & im not the only person in my house that uses the computer so its nice to be able to surf the web when the comp is being used... plus my tv is much bigger & better than my monitor so thats also a plus... i do wish IE supported flash though...

No kidding. Like for christ's sake, if I'm already paying you people for Live, don't fill my screen up with a bunch of bullshit. There's a reason I have only touched my Xbox for MGS in the last few months, it's starting to look like a GeoCities page.

I really hated the update last year, but i have finally gotten used to it. Its similar enough, so i don't hate it, like i would a revamp to get used to again. I kind of like the idea of pins, but IE is too late to be useful, and we got a Youtube and netflix app so that kills part of IE. Also my Chrome running laptop is right next to my Xbox. Also is recent really that different from Quickplay?

Overall i don't hate it, but at the same time its not impressive at all. Probably the laziest update.

I have this amazing thing called a computer. It already does all of that stuff I don't need my 360 to do, and I don't have to look at a bunch of ads if I don't want to. If I didn't already have free gold (I'm still not sure how, but I'm certain that I never paid for it.) I would probably cancel my account and stick to PS3 and PC.
