Xperia PLAY Hits Verizon On May 26th

Posted on Wednesday, May 18 @ 08:08:46 Eastern by

Sony Ericsson's Android-powered PlayStation Certified Xperia PLAY, announced earlier in the year at Mobile World Congress, will be on sale at Verizon stores beginning on May 26th. The Xperia PLAY combines what you need (smartphone), with what you want (game system), and will priced at $199 with a new two-year contract.

The Xperia PLAY will come preloaded with the following titles:
  • Madden NFL 11
  • Bruce Lee Dragon Warrior
  • Asphalt 6: Adrenaline
  • The Sims 3
  • Star Battalion
  • Crash Bandicoot
  • Tetris
You'll be able to expand upon that with a massive library of titles available from both, the Android Market, Verizon's V-Cast Apps, and eventually, PlayStation Suite.

The Xperia PLAY comes equipped with Android 2.3 Gingerbread and specs that can hang with any other smartphone on the market. It's the best of both worlds.

For more information on the Xperia PLAY, check out our preview, or click here. Look out for our full review of the hardware in the coming weeks.

While I'm sure the playstation supported content on this phone will be really cool, I think the coolest thing is how well the control pad will map to buttons for emulators like SNES and such. Using the touch screen to play Street Fighter Alpha really doesn't work.

Actually, I don't know how well it works, but I know there's an android PSX emulator out there, which means if the phone is fast enough you could play ANY psx game with psx-style buttons. I wish I was a verizon customer.

@Sammo: It is really nice to have an actual game pad on the phone but I don't know if I'd really play that man PSX games on the go.
