FEATURED VOXPOP oblivion437 Update: I was unfortunately not aware of Shamus Young's severe criticism of Fallout 3 available here to link in the original piece and I regret that.  It dovetails rather nicely with what I've written and it's much better executed than my piece.  I strongly recommend anyone...

Yoshida: "I Don't Know If PS3 Will Last Another Five Years"

Posted on Friday, October 4 @ 05:10:36 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

With PlayStation 4 on the not too distant horizon, the fate of Sony's third-generation console over the course of the next few years has become a major topic of discussion. Will the company drop it like a bad habit and throw 100% of its resources into making PS4 the best it can be?

According to Shuhei Yoshida of Sony Worldwide Studios, PlayStation 3 has some life left in it, but don't expect it to remain all that relevant five years down the line.

PS3 has been doing great - but it's not like everyone owns a PS3 already. There's always a group of consumers who come late in the cycle, people who wait for the price to come down. We're expanding geographically as well. The demand from Latin America, for example, is really really strong for PS3.

So we'll have a parallel strategy with PS3 and PS4, like we had between PS2 and PS3. PS3 was launched in 2006, in the sixth year of PS2, but PS2 lasted for another five years. I don't know if PS3 will last another five years - but definitely for the next couple of years, because of the price difference, the great library of games and the publisher side being able to support both.

There'll even be new games. We were talking about indie games - many indie announcements at gamescom were for games coming to PS4, PS Vita and PS3. These guys also support multi-generation platforms, so there'll continue to be a great supply of games.

This sounds about right, no? Sony has traditionally stuck to a ten year lifecycle for its gaming platforms, and it looks like PlayStation 3 will be able to age gracefully until that time has arrived.

Do all of you already own a PS3 at this point? Will you be selling yours off to help fund the purchase of a PS4? Sound off in the comments below and let us know.
