Microsoft's newest console has lots of different features, but video games might hold the device back from the software giant's true intentions.

Yoshida: No PS3 Price Drop Coming This Year

Posted on Tuesday, August 21 @ 12:00:00 Eastern by Alex_Osborn

According to Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida, the PlayStation 3 is in "prime time" and as such, there are currently no plans at the company to drop the console's price this year.

Yoshida broke the news to Eurogamer at gamescom, telling the outlet: “We are very happy with where we are in terms of PS3: the services, games, and the pricing included. So, there’s no plan for any change we can talk about.” Ah, did you catch that little bit at the end there? Obviously there isn't a price drop plan you can talk about, as that would ruin the surprise!

Regardless, this news is particularly surprising in light of all the rumors currently circulating the web regarding a super-slim redesigned version of the console. With regard to the PS3-4000, Yoshida only said it's nothing more than "a rumor."

Could this all just be an attempt by Yoshida to pull the wool over our eyes before a big reveal of the super-slim at gamescom? Probably not, but it won't stop me from hoping that's the case.

Here I was going through the day pretty happy when I learned that the AMD HD7800 series of graphics cards was getting another price drop this summer, when I read this. It's like he just wants to stomp all over my sand-castle made of hopes and dreams of being able to afford a PS3 despite my poor college student status. Although if Sony was to price drop anything, it should be the Vita: I know they are different markets, and have different purposes, but the idea of a PS3, with its sizeable game catalog acquired over the years, being less money than the vita just seems crazy.

I am kind of planning on getting one, and even without a price drop, but i am gonna wait for the holidays to see if i can get a bundle or something.

My PS3 spontaneously died again, five months after the three month service warranty began. :(

So I am saddened by this news as it will force me to spend more money when I get around to replacing old fatty.
