Your Gamerscore Finally Matters Now

Posted on Friday, September 28 @ 16:58:01 Eastern by

Microsoft in a tweet in mid-July promised "a new way to earn Rewards based on your Achievements" to be announced in the fall. Now that promise has been fulfilled. Finally, your Xbox e-Penis actually means something.

Xbox Live Rewards through MyAchievements is now offering three tiers of player rewards and rebates depending on the player's total Gamerscore, as long as you are an Xbox Live Gold member. If you have at least 3000 Achievement Points (a Contender), you wil a earn a special gift during your birthday month; 10000+ (a Champion) nets an additional 1 percent rebate on all Xbox Live purchases; and 25000+ (a Legend) bumps that up to a 2 percent rebate.

As you can see in the picture above, I have qualified for all three rewards. (You know you want my Garrus eye piece.) However, considering that I have friends who have upwards of 60,000+ Achievement Points, I would have loved to have seen additional tiers beyond that which offer more rebates or perhaps special avatar rewards that you can show off to your friends.

To which tier do you belong?

I'd be a Legend too if the ethernet in my 360 hadn't died.

A good start, but the rewards seem kinda lame.

None since I don't own an Xbox :P

But this is what achievements should be; rewards for stuff you achieved in game other than getting a slap on a back that says WELL DONE MAN!

They need more tiers. I would be legend since my GS is almost 60,000. They need a few more tiers for 50k+ and 100k+ for seriously dedicated people. I have been getting achievements since 2006, but that probably means nothing to Microsoft.

I want everyone to go to the site and read the fine print for the "special gift" and prepare to laugh. Also, 2%? If anything this deal is just insulting to the userbase if they're trying to get people excited about a deal where you can spend hundreds of dollars and at the end of the year still not have enough of a "reward" for a piece of DLC.

I'm assuming it's like all those coupons for $1 or $5 off something that read as being worth only a fraction of a cent

Pretty much. You're getting rewarded for what you spend in Xbox LIVE's marketplace. Your reward rebate is getting some MS points back. So, let's do some math to show as an example.

Say you're a Champion who gets a 1% rebate, like me, and you bought yourself 1600 MS Points (1600 MS Points in 20 U.S. dollars). If you spend all 1600 MS points the marketplace, you get 16 MS Points! Amazing, right?

Oh and the "special gift" for your birthday is most likely an avatar clothing, which is what they gave me.

I'm a mere Contender with around 6150 Gamerscore....but this is something I don't intend to take advantage of, considering the disappointing deals proposed.

I'm a champion, but very close to Legend. The rewards are like Powerup Reward offered by Gamestop. You can take my statement as a complement or insult.

Also, Nick, be on the lookout for Here is Howard.

I don't have an Xbox 360, but on PS3 I have 14 Platinum Trophies. If I were to convert that into Gamerscore, easy enough since it's basically a game's maximum Gamerscore, I'm looking at a minimum of 14000. That's enough for Champion. I've also got a bunch of copper and silver trophies, with a few gold, on games I haven't 100% achieved. I don't want to try and figure out the exact number, that's too much work for speculation, but I personally doubt it would push me into Legend territory.

Since you have to buy points and then use them to buy things on the market place, the discount is basically useless. I buy points in the exact amount I need to get what I want, taking one percent off of the cost is going to leave me with a few extra points left over, points that I've already paid for. I would need to buy a ridiculous number of things from the marketplace for those extra points to add up enough to actually be able to use them. Something I don't do. I suppose there is the birthday gift, but I doubt it's going to be any better than this "discount".
