What a year for gamers. Despite every bone in our body telling us that three console systems couldn't possibly co-exist for very long, here we are with all three still offering excellent software for a wide range of games. And though some heavy hitters didn't make it out this year, the PC still managed to put up some big numbers.

But some games are better than others, and others are better still. Far be it from us to tell you which ones you think are best, but we're all for giving out our very own

HOW IT ALL WORKS

2003 presents a unique challenge for award ceremonies. With so many titles released across all three console platforms, breaking it down by system seemed inefficient. Likewise, a Top 20 format is inherently awkward. How do you compare a great sports game like Tiger Woods 2004 to a PC first-person shooter like Call of Duty? Why is one of those games "Number 12" while the other is "Number 11?" Seems pretty random to us.

So instead, Game Revolution has opted to do a little bit of everything. In addition to awards for the best of each genre, check out our Top 5 games of the year! Then, go ahead and write us nasty letters telling us how we got it all wrong. We can take it, really.

Game Revolution gives out awards as it sees fit. If there are no worthy recipients in a certain category, no awards will be given. Editor's Choice awards are given to games that did not win in a particular category, but caught the eye of the GR editorial staff and just had to get something.

These games exemplify the upper echelon of video and computer gaming over the past year. Only games released between 1/03 and 1/04 are eligible. Awards are based on a complex formula involving a dartboard, a giant rat, boxed wine and lip gloss. Our hats off to the winners!
