Arguably the toughest category of all, the sports genre is crowded and competitive. But a few games stood out from the pack...

Sports Game Of The Year!

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004
EA / All Consoles

They say that golf is one of the hardest sports to master, but apparently it's also one of the hardest sports to stop playing, at least if you've got Tiger Woods 2004. Even non-golfers can appreciate the awesome depth and intuitive gameplay, not to mention the 19 courses and myriad of compelling game modes. Heck, we spent a few hours just tinkering with the revolutionary player creator alone. Once you go golf, you never go back.

The Runner-ups!

Tony Hawk's Underground
Activision / All Consoles

Another year, another winner from Neversoft and Activision. It's hard to believe that this series is still so good, but THUG proves that if you've got great core gameplay, you can keep up a winning tradition. Notable additions like the unique downloadable face feature and a wildly customizable experience keeps the Hawkman on top.

Madden NFL 2004
EA / All Consoles

There's only one video game in the football Hall of Fame, and this is it. Though contenders have pushed the series to the limit, Madden 2004 backs down for no game thanks to its refined gameplay, good looks and enormous single-player depth. All that's missing are the buffalo wings.

SSX 3
EA / All Consoles

It might seem strange to think that a snowboarding game can completely overtake your life, but SSX 3 managed to do just that with its unique design and fantastic delivery and gameplay. Where else can you board down a continuous slope for literally a half-hour? Big tricks, big air, big game.
