Nintendo Gamecube
Though there were fewer games available for the Gamecube than the other systems this year, the quality of the software was very solid. Several games stood head and shoulders above the rest.

Revolutionary Gamecube Game of 2001

Star Wars: Rogue Leader
LucasArts

LucasArts strikes back with the best Gamecube game of 2001. Between the spot-on control, feverish firefights and simply awe-inspiring graphics, Rogue Leader was the first killer app for the Gamecube. It was also the most fun, bringing an unprecendented level of detail to the Star Wars universe. Now if only we could have aimed our proton torpedos at a certain Gungan...

Best Gamecube Game - Action
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Nintendo

Is it a fighting game? Is it an action game? Who knows. It's a ton of fun, that's for sure, and there's gotta be something wrong with you if you don't find some joy in Super Smash Bros. Melee. Bowser vs. Donkey Kong beats Godzilla vs. King Kong any day of the week.

Best Gamecube Game - Sports
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3
Activision

In a last minute decision, Activision ported THPS 3 over to the Gamecube just in time for the system launch. A good thing, too, because it's terrific. Great gameplay, great graphics, and a great start to sports gaming on the Cube.

Editor's Choice Award - Pikmin (Nintendo)

Shigeru Miyamoto's latest offering is a weird one...which is why we like it so much. Fix your spaceship with the help of freaky little brussel sprouts. Vegetarians rejoice!

Editor's Choice Award - Super Monkey Ball (Sega)

We had to give this game something. Grab a few friends and Super Monkey Ball will serve you well into the wee hours of the morning. Besides, they're just so darn cuddly.
