Sony Playstation 2
Good things come to those who wait, and after a year filled with many questions and precious few answers, the Playstation 2 brought out a winter storm with a barrage of incredible games. In fact, there are so many great games out for the system that it's tough to only honor a few. Wish we always had that problem. Hehe.

Revolutionary PS2 Game of 2001

Grand Theft Auto 3
Rockstar Games

A unanimous decision. In a crowded field of terrific PS2 games, GTA 3 stood head and shoulders above the rest. With its advanced programming, superb delivery and open-ended gameplay, GTA 3 stole more than a few cars...it stole our jaded gamer's heart. Embroiled in controversy due to its violent nature, it's much, much more than a topic for the 6 o' clock news - it's the best console game of the year.

Best PS2 Game - Action
Grand Theft Auto 3
Rockstar Games

You can carjack a Viper, jump it onto the elevated train tracks, slam it into a group of squad cars, run from the explosion, torch a few peds with your flame thrower, hop into an ambulance and drop off patients at the hospital to earn some extra dough just for fun. 'Nuff said.

Best PS2 Game - Action/Adventure
Metal Gear Solid 2
Konami

Making a worthy sequel to one of the coolest games on the PSX seemed like a daunting task, but Hideo Kojima and crew did just that. MGS 2 elevates the series to new levels of cinematic achievement with outstanding delivery and great gameplay.

Best PS2 Game - Racing
Gran Turismo 3
Sony

The GT series has always been a favorite, and this latest version is no exception. Incredibly realistic graphics take the classic Gran Turismo gameplay to new levels of immersion. A simple must-have for any racing fan.

Best PS2 Game - RPG
Final Fantasy X
Square / EA

It wasn't even close. Any RPG fan worth his salt knows that FFX is the best choice for the PS2. Classic in gameplay and cutting edge in presentation, FFX serves as a reminder that the folks at Square know things about console role-playing that know one else knows.

Best PS2 Game - Sports
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3
Activision

We don't know what the Neversoft guys put in their coffee, but we want some. New tricks and beautiful graphics are one thing, but actually making the game playable online before Sony's official PS2 modem is even released? Revolutionary all the way, baby.

Editor's Choice Award - Jak & Daxter (Sony)

Simply the best platform game we've played in ages, Jak & Daxter serves as a powerful reminder that a little imagination go can a very, very long way.

Editor's Choice Award - Devil May Cry (Capcom)

If Castlevania and Resident Evil had a child, it might look like this. High-flying action and the coolest bosses around make DMC an office favorite.

Editor's Choice Award - NBA Street (EA Sports)

It might look like a souped up NBA Jam, but NBA Street takes action-sports gaming to new levels of fun and style. It took over the office for a solid month. That NEVER happens.
