In 1977, Apple unveiled the Apple II to the public. Retailing for $1,298, the Apple II was the first home computer to have color graphics. Further enhancements continued over the next 7 years. The Apple II+ was quickly introduced and was a small step up from the original Apple II, but did include a new form of BASIC designed by a small company you might know . . . Microsoft. The Apple IIe was the most popular of the Apple II's and was in production for almost 10 years. The Apple IIc was introduced at the same time as the Macintosh, so needless to say it was overshadowed just a bit. Classic games like Ultima, Temple of Apshai, Archon, and Autoduel will live on in the video gaming lexicon forever. So, why not download an emulator, get a ROM of your favorite old game, a relive the days when 64K was a huge amount of RAM.
Note: There is also the Apple IIgs. None of these emulators work with the IIgs. Period. There are emulators that do, but they cost money.
The newest Apple II emulator also happens to be one of the best. With full support of all video modes and many add-ons, Oasis does it all. If only it could make thousands of Julian fries. Remember, you still need ROMs of your favorite game in order to play them. See the bottom of this page for ROM links.
Only if you're a true geek from the early eighties will you understand why the emulator is called Catakig. This is a great Apple II emulator for the Mac. It even goes so far as to emulate the common bugs that Apple II users always had to deal with. If you ask me, that's going to far, but nobody asked me.
This emulator is a bit different from the others. After downloading the emulator itself, you also have to download the ROM image of the version of the Apple II you want to emulate (II+ or IIe). Then, and only then, you have to download a ROM of your favorite game from one of the sites listed at the bottom of the page.
Note: Due to copyright laws, it is illegal to download a ROM of any game that you do not own, unless you delete it within 24 hours. These laws also make it difficult to keep up with functioning ROM sites and often these sites are not available. Game Revolution does not host any ROM images on our site, nor does Game Revolution endorse piracy.
