Time to put on your safety glasses and hearing protection for another trip to the Game Revolution gun range. This time our new weapon is the Namco Guncon. It comes packaged along with the games Time Crisis and Point Blank.

The Guncon is the first gun I've seen in a long time that has claimed to have a truly new innovation: it is supposedly more accurate. This is done with an extra cord that runs from the game port to the video input on your TV. The small attachment lets your video signal pass through, but it also allows the Guncon to take quick 'snapshots' of your game screen as you play and compare them to the signal it receives from the optical sensor in the front.

The result? The Guncon actually is noticeably more accurate. You'll find it obvious the first time you use the calibration screen. The aiming crosshair is nice and steady and doesn't jump around in a little half-inch circle. While not perfect, if your game is Guncon enhanced, your shooting will be more precise. Frankly, this is terrific, and is the best thing to happen to the light-gun since I first played Duck Hunt.

But enough high praise, lets talk ergonomics. The grip is well-sized and feels comfortable, although like most light-guns the barrel is enormous. The trigger pull is a little too long and the very thick cord comes directly out of the bottom of the grip, making it difficult to hold the firearm properly (this is a very common failing). Finally, the 'grenade' button and the 'duck' button (for Time Crisis ) are up at the front on the sides of the barrel instead of conveniently placed on the side of the grip and/or the hammer so you can hit them with your thumb.

The Guncon also has no extra features. No auto-reload and no rapid fire. While I generally disapprove of cheating, having the ability is nice, just in case - besides, you don't have to use it.

The extra accuracy more than makes up for these minor flaws, however. I hope that this is not a patented technology so that other hardware manufacturers will soon be copying it. Not only will this make the guns cheaper, but who knows? With my help they may even fix these other problems and produce a truly superior weapon.

So long from the GR gun range. You can keep a round in the chamber, but always leave the safety on.
