The worst kept secret in gaming.

An idea so obvious, so plainly brilliant as a Super Smash Bros. clone was bound to happen some time. It's almost a wonder that Sony has taken as long as they have to ape the idea.

It bears remembering that it took Nintendo well over a decade of franchise building before they threw their characters together in a highly animated, chaotic ring to duke it out. The PlayStation stable of recognizable names continues to grow, but PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale has been a long time coming.

All the speculation and rumor-mongering can be swept aside at this point, because All-Stars works, and that's really all that matters. Fighting Fat Princess as the God of War might not make sense on paper, but when you're mashing the triangle button and storing up power for a super-attack, the questions fade away and a grin quickly replaces any confused look you have on your face.

The pre-E3 demo Sony showed off this week featured six playable characters: Kratos, Killzone's General Radec, the Fat Princess, Sly Cooper, PaRappa the Rapper, and Twisted Metal's Sweet Tooth. Each character comes complete with full movesets and three different levels of super attacks. As you fight, an energy bar at the bottom of the screen will fill up. You can also pick up energy when it drops from items and specific moves, but you'll spend most of your time beating the crap out of each other on your way up.

The X button is used to jump and double jump in mid-air, while Square, Triangle, and Circle act as different moves that can be modified by the direction you're actively pressing on the d-pad or left stick. The L1 button acts as a guard while R1 is used to pick up items. R2 will activate your super attacks and the right stick can be used to grab and throw your opponents. Don't be misled, though, into believing that you can just throw people out of the ring to off your enemies.

All-Stars is much more focused on smart use of your super meter. PaRappa's level three super will destroy anyone on screen at the time. Kratos can use his level two super to turn into a tornado that kills off anyone in the vertical space above him.

And that brings us to the real stars. As exciting as it is to smash your favorite PlayStation characters together in a knock-down, drag-out fight, the stages these fights take place in are incredibly inventive. In Hades, an obviously God of War-inspired level, gets a Patapon twist, forcing players to dodge both a towering boss from Kratos's world and the volleys of Patapon in the background. A LittleBigPlanet-inspired level also throws in a Buzz Quiz TV question that requires players to navigate to specific areas to answer a question, lest they get damaged by a pie. Even a Jak and Daxter level isn't safe when the Hot Shots Golf crew starts teeing off in the background.

PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale still has plenty of room to flesh out the roster and hopefully bring in third-party characters into the fray. If Kratos can face off with Sub-Zero and Mileena, why can't Scorpion fight Sly Cooper?

I'm more impressed with the stages than I am with anything else thus far. Looks like a lot of fun. It's a 100% Smash Bros rip-off, but I'm glad they did it. It's the right formula for a mash-up like this. Radec's super move is so cool, and answering Buzz Quiz TV questions mid-match made me smile.

It was difficult to write a preview that didn't just turn out to be "this is a ripoff," so I tried to illustrate the core systems and how the differ.

Yeah, -the 3D space. The focus on meter feels very different compared to SSB.

I have a feeling he's the last boss. Or maybe a sub-boss. The VP of boss characters or something.

How would you describe the art style? I can sort of see from the photos, but the color palette and characters in particular look very complex compared to the simple shapes and clean lines/colors of SSB.

Yes, it looks beautiful, but let's not forget that what made Smash Bros such an excellent game was that it was fun for both the casual gamer and the one who would devote months into it (like me!) and that it didn't take itself seriously.

I'm actually worried about the opposite. I love SSB because the action is so clear and easy to read despite being so hectic. I'm hoping that the battle for one more polygon doesn't cause the PS version to suffer in terms of performance and overall presentation.

I will say that it was NOT as easy to discern what was going on as immediately as in Super Smash Bros. I had NO problem picking up SSB on the 64 and knowing exactly what I was doing. This one not so much. Still plenty easy to pick up and play, but there were times where I had to stop and wonder where I was and what I was trying to do.

They've gone to great lengths to preserve the look of the characters despite them being jammed onto the same screen and into different settings, so Radec looks like Radec from Killzone, albeit with a lower polygon count. I guess the colors were more vibrant to push the cartoony nature, but there is a definite dichotomy between Sly or Parappa and Radec or Kratos.

Considering the low quality of other Smash Bros clones (TMNT, anyone?), Sony has their work cut out for them. Though maybe that's my bias talking, since I've always disliked Smash Bros.

Ah well, as long as it sells well, it will be worth Sony's effort. I wish them luck.

Sooooooo what if it's a rip-off, do we have anything on this system similar to SSB? Not that I know of.

It's almost bad as the people complaining about Gameloft games.
I'm looking forward to this, if there's an adventure mode. That's the only thing I liked about Brawl, really.
Also, what's up with the outlines?

For mobile games? Not really. I enjoyed Modern Combat 3 for what it was worth, and NOVA 1&2 are still fun to play.

Their other games I cannot vouch for.

I got curious and looked into the games they've developed. According to Wikipedia, they did the Assassin's Creed games. Either someone is trolling HARD, or they're talking about any mobile versions that were released (it didn't mention Gameloft on any of the AC pages). They also did the Earthworm Jim HD port apparently. Other than that, their list of IP's looks pretty much like a pile.

Where's Crash Bandicoot? They better have an Armored Core stage. And "Croc" from the PS1 as well! He was a GOD in my eyes.

    Daxter, Clank, MK-II and Mog.
If all four of these characters are playable, I'm buying this day one.

Well, it looks like a better take on "Smash Bros." than Onimusha Blade Warriors, though that is an incredibly low bar.

At least this one seems to hit the right notes, so I will withhold any judgement until I can try the game for myself.
