What do these ratings mean?

200% health AND an exploding shield? You gotta be kidding me.

It was reported that the development of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was contentious, which isn't surprising given the way fans have gravitated to lofty expectations of a perfect blend of stealth and action. A cyborg ninja that can slice and dice, while still providing plenty of opportunity for the franchise's signature stealth?

It sounds too good to be true, and that's because it is. Of course, Platinum Games took on the project, saving it from cancelation and giving fans at least one look at what a post-MGS4 Raiden game might be like. In the end, is Revengeance a title fans and curios alike should play?

Raiden starts in Africa, escorting a president through newly peaceful territory. Kojima Productions puts the usual spin on government intrigue, high-flying ideals, and a wide world of "comical" commentary on race. A band of mercenaries calling themselves Desperado attack, kill the president, and leave Raiden for dead. Of course, being a cyborg, Raiden returns with a few upgrades, notably to his sword-swinging arm.

Players will find that they regain health and fuel for their high-speed chopping needs, so long as the sword keeps slicing and dicing other cyborgs. Excitedly bashing away at one enemy will trigger a Zandatsu opportunity.

That's your chance to cut your foes apart all while hoping to grab their luminescent, blue cyborg spines. That's the gooey center you want. Getting to that is all that matters and you'll do what it takes because that completely refills your health and energy, all so you can turn to the next enemy and start again.

As for the story, Desperado continues to do evil stuff, and Raiden pursues like the good boy scout he is. It doesn't take long for Raiden's split-personality to appear and with it, insane difficulty walls insurmountable to laypeople like myself. Raiden's not able to dodge at the start like many other action-game heroes, but he can parry. [There's an unlockable dodge mechanic, but the game isn't worth the investment to get to that point.] Unfortunately, to parry successfully in any difficulty above Easy, you also have to point the left analog stick in the appropriate direction. That's fine once you've memorized the attack animations in each level, but for a first playthrough, the parry system and lack of an all-purpose evasion move makes for stunted, fitful gameplay.

All of this comes to a head when players meet George, a Mexican orphan kidnapped and trafficked so that his organs could be harvested. Of course, Desperado only wants the children's brains for their own PMC uses. Remembering his past, Raiden pushes forward and chases the Desperado gang to Denver and onward around the globe.

I couldn't, though. Revengeance can border on masochistic, forcing players to question their dedication to this tightly dressed sword-swinger. After switching to Easy, the game bent to my will immediately, allowing Raiden to auto-parry whenever an unfriendly blade started its arc. So long as I mashed the attack button, Raiden would cover my ass.

It was disappointing, to say the least. I can imagine how it feels to parry successfully on normal or hard difficulty (glorious), but the rest of the game isn't entertaining enough for the commitment. New weapons unlock throughout the campaign, but there's little to no incentive to switch between them. What's more, Raiden cannot switch weapons while moving, so forget swapping the polearm for sais mid-fight. The camera can also get in the way, especially when Raiden is close to an enemy and when the camera is fighting against the sword controls with the left analog stick.

Every plot hole sprints in and awkwardly lands on its face thanks to the full acknowledgement of other characters. When Raiden starts fighting for his own ideals and not his contractor's, Raiden's boss Boris "officially condemns" him as "a pain in the ass hole."

In the end, Revengeance plainly represents the two competing ideals inherent in stealth and action games. A typical Platinum Games experience creates tension by overwhelming and throwing a ton of activity at the player. A typical Kojima game creates tension by forcing the player to fight the urge to move aggressively.

This conflict is no more apparent than in the stealth mechanics you're occasionally given the option of engaging in. Raiden moves like a nimble cyborg semi-truck. Turn on your visor and locate a red enemy. Lumber over and cautiously approach the enemy from behind or above. Press circle or B to see a fancy animation where you stab the poor bastards in your way. You have an even chance of goofily wandering in front of the cyborg before ultimately being successful or failing because the controls don't allow for precision.

As for replay, players can collect a million things and unlock VR missions, concept art, and more. Play through the game repeatedly and each time players will carry over stat increases and the like. Those increases might make the game easier on higher difficulties, but I didn't have the heart to try.

I love the gooey center of every cyborg PMC out there, but Revengeance fights the player every step of the way. What's more, reducing the difficulty ultimately boils down the combat to a button masher, leaving the experience hollow and draining all the same. Fans and masochists alike might find a lot to love, but even I can't stand the crunchy outside of a bug for the sweet gooey insides.

Don't really see GR ever censoring dissenting opinion.

Maybe if it was outright trolling like the "Hidden World" review.

Occasionally when an article like a review or preview is updated, the comments can be lost because a new version of the article is actually swapped for the one that originally appeared on the front page. We would never censor comments or silence dissent. I'll go read those comments now.

I was seriously sweating bullets when I saw that 2010 trailer! I was like "OH HELL! METAL GEAR FUCKING SOLID WITH SWORDPLAY LIKE IN MGS 2 EXCEPT WITH SUPER SICK PHYSICS BASED GORE!!!!". Then it disappeared. Then it reappeared as pretty much what it is now. I played the demo and FUCKING LOVED IT!!!....but I kind of worried that I just played the best part....After waiting for this game since 2010 to read reviews and hear it can be finished within 3 hours!....I will buy this game when it is $20 and play it for a zillion hours!....should have mentioned the old version looked sick but the new one runs at roughly 60fps on both consoles(2010 demo version was 30fps)! I've played both demos and Xbox is a little sharper in game but ps3 has high resolution cutscenes. Seems like a fair review! I loved Raiden in MGS2 and MGS 4...and as fun as this game is....(MILD SPOILER!!!!!!!))why is he not off somewhere far away with his girlfriend and son!?...and maybe old snake if he is still kickin'!

Then you should start with one. That is an oversight, but I stand by my opinion of the game. It's a mess, the characters and story are boring and overwrought, and the payoff isn't worth the investment.

This almost made me cancel my preorder. But Im gonna stick to my guns and pick the game up. I really enjoyed the demo whenI thought I would hate the game, and thought the parry system was great once I learned how to use it. How are the boss battles? Thats one thing that is always epic in Metal Gear games and I expect over the top bosses here too.

Ugh, I absolutely hated the boss battles. Bosses themselves are lame, and the battles are overly frustrating. I don't know if these reviewers that gave 8s and 9s played the same game as I did.

Is this a Playstation exclusive? I still think the reviews should have an indicator for system.
Here's my suggestion, take it or leave it. What about something like this:

Copy provided by publisher. Based on PS3 version. Also available for Xbox 360 and Wii U.

That way it's clear and right at the end of the review so you can't miss it, also if you wanted to just find out what system it's for it makes you read the review or at least skim it to find the system it's for at the bottom. What do ya think?

I agree with this. For some reason I thought this was a Vita title and had to look at the bottom to see it was PS3. Still not sure if its an exclusive but I will assume it is. I also don't care that much as I have zero intention of playing anyways.

I see a pattern here. What happened with yours? Every review that I read so far seems like this game does have its flaws but you just seem like you criticized it every chance you could. I've trusted every Game Revolution review for many years. I'm just surprised since most reviews that I've read here are always on par with the rest that I see else where. Did you set up the bar so high for this game that once you played it, it failed to met your expectations?

Honestly, this is just my opinion, but far too many games are getting 8+ scores. It seems like we could all benefit from spreading our opinions out among the other numbers. I have a negative opinion of the game, many of my negatives were echoed in other reviews, but maybe not in their scores. I hope my text can help give gamers another look at the title.

I understand that its your opinion. And I'm ok with that. I was just surprised to see the score was 2 of out 5 when everyone else using the 5 stars or "R's or whatever you want to call it, had it at 4 or 4-1/2. Where every other review at least said.....Play it if you can get your hands on it. Your review, gives the sense that I should avoid this game. Overall, I like the honesty you gave and anybody playing this game will understand the faults you found with this game.

Thank you for not railing against me and screaming at me because "I got it wrong." Thank you for listening to me and asking questions instead of writing my opinion off without consideration.

"but far too many games are getting 8+ scores"

Out of the last 20 games you've reviewed, you have an average score of 4/5. Fifteen out of the twenty games received a 4 or higher.

Now, assuming that the scoring system is taken literally, you'd be giving out 8's like crazy. But if we instead were to correlate it to the older review system, which had the third highest ranking as being approximately between 86 and 89, it would mean that your average score would instead be more like an 8.7 out of 10.

If you took the twenty or so games from before then, due to a few clunkers like 007 Legends, your average would drop down to about a 3.8 out of 5 (I didn't maths this), but even then, you're guilty of this as well.

Brain hurting levels of math going on in here. So I'm guilty of it too? So I'm right. Everyone needs to calm the **** down and be harder on the shitty games coming out lately.

Does that actually mean you're going to start being harder on games, or are you just saying that as a justification for this score being a complete outlier to the average?

I think that's a problem with score based reviews. Even though the score is low, I'd still pick it up based on the actual article because the issues pointed out are one's I can live with (and seem to be commonplace in platinum games). I'd be all in favour of moving away from scores altogether.

Dan, you know I respect you, but...

You are really bad at video games. I mean, you're just awful. And from what I can tell from other people, this is sort of like a flashy version of God Hand. If this is really the case, then that would explain just about everything.

So I'm gonna take this with a grain of salt. In a salt mine. In the middle of the great salt lake.

I beat God Hand and am not really happy about that...I was going to give the game a chance until you compared it to that damn God Hand. I got to a point in that game where I wanted to finish, needed to finish, and then finished but I was still somehow pissed at the overall experience. I seriously broke a controller on the last boss. It was the only game that motivated me to completion through pure frustration...Needless to say the replay value on that was Nil

I'm very glad everyone has a chance to play the game before buying in the demo because you can see there whether it's for you or not. The concept certainly sounds cool (and it is) but the mechanics, story, difficulty, etc can turn people off (like it did with me).

So you score the piss easy DmC reboot a 4.0 for "Intense pace and action"

And MGR gets a 2.0 because it's too hard. On easy. Well okay let me tell you about a game called Ninja Gaiden...

Feel like I'm the only one that wants games to actually give you a challenge anymore.

No. My criticism was that Normal was too hard and Easy removed any semblance of challenge by auto-parrying every attack coming your way.

Anyone should be able to pick up any game and begin playing on Normal and get through it. The ideal situation is that a game teaches you enough throughout the course of its campaign so that you are well-equipped for the challenges you face along the way. That's not the case here, thus DmC is rated higher and MGRR is rated lower.

The game's controls are pretty simple, and enemies give you a bright shiny "HEY LOOK IM GONNA SWING AT YOU" warning before they hit you.
They even play that old trope of "mook chivialry" by not attacking (or attacking less) when they're off screen.

Really don't see what was so difficult. All it ever really comes down to is learning a pattern and reaction time.
So either I have the reaction time of Bruce Lee high on PCP or you're actually a sloth wearing a human suit.

every time i saw footage of this game i was never impressed, im not shocked it turned out bad... it looked like a copy & paste game mimicking NINJA GAIDEN & NINJA BLADE but with no purpose & with poor execution... id much rather play those games... their both good and their both cheap...

I have played a little Ninja Gaiden but I never tried Ninja Blade. I heard mixed things about that title, but you're right, now that it's on a discount and I can go try for myself.

I've only played the demo of this and unfortunately I wasn't very impressed by this game either. I completely agree with danielrbischoff with his review.

I didn't like any of the characters or the dialogue, the storyline was kinda dumb (I understand it's just a demo, but the characters/story did nothing for me at all) and the gameplay wasn't that great at all, especially the moments of "stealth". The only thing I really liked was the use of the katana, slowing things down and then slicing and dicing. That was pretty cool.

I showed my brother the demo and his response after watching a few minutes of gameplay, was "Ugh, really?" - I think that pretty much sums up my thoughts on Revengeance.

That's what the demo is there for. I encourage anyone who's interested in the game to try it first. Glad you enjoyed the review Craig.

"Nonsensical, unintelligible plot" Dan have you played any of the previous MGS games? That's pretty much been their selling point since MGS2. The campy over-the-top ridiculousness is one of the more endearing parts of this game. Being completely frank here because I really don't care about MGS or DMC type games. But if you liked the wacky over the top fun of Bayonetta, you'll probably like this game. 8/10 if you have a love for all things campy and over-the-top in MGS, if not wait till it hits the bargain bin in about three months. 30 bucks for this game is worth it. BTW hype and expectations can be a *****, I expected Bioshock to be a full fledged FPS/RPG like it's spiritual predecessor and I *****ed and moaned about it not having the same amount of depth so much I overlooked a game with a lot of charm and a pretty good twist. Even though I still think it has flaws, but for other reasons now.

Haha, hey Silios! Haven't seen you in a while.

You're right. The Metal Gear fans expect a certain level of confusing in their games. $30 bucks is totally worth it in my mind as well. Even just to try it if your curious and like action games.

These comments are a god damned master class on how to respond to criticism. You're a good man, Daniel.

Probably still gonna play this, though. Pure action games are really a dying breed, and I love them so.

wow Daniel. Harsh, harsh review. Very surprising I must admit.

I will say that i SERIOUSLY had withdrawn $80 from my ATM this afternoon and was on my way to GameStop (aka Evil Empire) and was ready to purchase MGS: R. My attitude was, "how bad could it be? It;s Metal Gear! And I have Crysis 3 already and there's nothing else coming out for a week or two."

And I was ready to buy UNTIL I pulled up my GR link on my iPhone to see if anything else was out or something/anything new on Steam......... and then I saw your review. My trust in GR and YOU, SPECIFICALLY, BISCHOFF runs deep and thus, after reading this, I put the cash back in my wallet and refrained from the purchase. I will stick with Crysis 3 for now with a dash of Ni No Kuni.

HOWEVER..... everytime I watch a badass-looking gameplay video or read another positive review (IGN rates 8.5/10 along with others), I am skeptical of this review. So I will trust you on this one Daniel, as I always have.

I personally enjoyed this game BUT (there's always a but) i feel it had so much more potential to be a better hack n slash instead of a weird hybrid stealth stuff just to please some fans of the franchise.

But anyways pretty accurate review, keep it up

I've been a GR reader for quite some time now, even if my posts or general activity don't show it. It's really good knowing that people out their still have enough integrity to actually tell people how something really is, 8's and above are given out way too much in terms of game reviews. If something doesn't agree with you, then it's just that. But again it's refreshing to see AAA games and their spinoffs get criticized in a manner like this, after the whole gamespot fiasco with kane and lynch and all... Keep this site going Daniel and crew, without you guys I'll be forced to see 5 out of 5's galore with no relevant opinions.

Just to follow up on this. I got my copy yesterday, and got passed the 5th chapter. Reading your review again...I understand your frustration on the parry system and how it could demoralize you to keep playing. I will admit that I did die a few times because I wasn't able to parry correctly. (played on normal btw)There were even a few times that I thought I moved the joystick correctly and should have parried or block the moved but I still got hit. So I started to get frustrated. As I moved on and the game progressed, I agree with you that the story is full holes and leaves a lot of questions up in the air. Yes, the fact that you cant change your secondary weapon mid fight sucks. But I disagree where you said "There is little to no incentive to switch to them". I disagree. After equipping it, I was able to chain combos with my sword and pole arm, and I will have to admit that so far that pole arm is a bit to overpowered. Again, this was later in the game.....................

Again, this was later in the game as I started to get better with my combos and I was able to parry a lot better. I like the upgrading system to Raiden's body and weapons. I still have a couple of chapters to go, but I highly doubt my opinion will change on this. Could be that I'm a sick person and I love watching people get sliced into pieces but I like this game. Again....it does have imperfections and you voiced them out. And I respect that. I'd give it a higher score but I'm not a writer for GR. So I'll leave it at that. BTW: The kid George is not a Mexican orphan. The kid is from Guyana or Guinea, he says it. I'm from south of the border myself and I don't recognize any of the slang the kid used in this game.

Ah, thanks for the clarification on that. I'm glad you're enjoying the game. What score would you have given it if you were a writer for GR? Just curious.

So far I would give it a 3 out of 5. I don't see myself giving this game more then 3-1/2. Like I said in my original post....every other review I read said its a game worth checking out if your into these type of games. I think a 3 is a fair score knowing it has few or many imperfections. (However you want to see it.) FOR ME...its still fun and something I would prob play again after I beat the story. (Going trophy hunting) Where that's where I questioned your review for giving it a 2 and giving the impression that we should just skip this game. I mean you even have Stinger confessing that he was gonna buy this game, but after reading your review, he decided not to. Goes to show you how much we trust reviews like yours on this site. I hope you don't change that either. Every review that I read on here from any game I want to play, you guys haven't let me down so far. This is the only game I have really questioned as far as I could remember. And I'll keep trusting the reviews.

I find the contrasts of opinions in reviews with this game interesting. This is pretty much one of the lower scoring reviews, but this has been receiving a real mixed bag of opinions from various sites. The general consensus though seems more positive than say DmC though (and much less controversial).

However, I personally have yet to play the game and am eager to get my hands on it to experience it myself. I've been watching playthroughs and have been hyping like a little girl just watching them, but that's hardly comparable to be honest. Though still, I'm very excited as Platinum Games are in my opinion definitely one of the best companies when it comes to making action games, certainly better than the pretentious people at Ninja Theory.

"Unfortunately, to parry successfully in any difficulty above Easy, you also have to point the left analog stick in the appropriate direction. That's fine once you've memorized the attack animations in each level, but for a first playthrough, the parry system and lack of an all-purpose evasion move makes for stunted, fitful gameplay."

It's incredibly easy to know when to parry. Every enemies' eyes flash red before they attack. Even if they're off screen the flash will appear at the side of the screen to tell you what direction to parry in

Some people simply need to stay away from games that are above their level of capability. Stick to something more your speed, such as Fruit Ninja. Where is the 'rate this article negatively' button?

I got this game though I was skeptical somewhat after playing the demo for about 20 minutes...Really wish I had followed my instincts. It's not a matter of difficulty, I enjoy hard games. Zazaza states that some people need to stay away from games above their level of capability. I'm sorry, but I am completely incapable of enjoying this complete nonsense. The gameplay is ok at best. The story is so dull that I actually stopped caring about halfway through the game. This is far from the quality of story I've (and I'm sure many others) come to expect from a Metal Gear game. I never had any problem with Raiden from MGS2 or MGS4, but this isn't Raiden. To me, it's Dante with a cyborg skin, and I can't stand Dante (at least from the original DMC games, haven't played the reboot). I'm almost finished with the game and there is nothing that is making me say "Man, I just can't wait to start this game over again" like I did with every other MG game. Hoping Ground Zeroes is better.

One last thing, every other review I have read completely missed the mark on this. Yours nailed it.
