NBA Ballers: Chosen One - Xbox360 - GR Review

Baller?. . . But I hardly know her!

First off, let’s get one thing straight. Ballers is a nutsack of a name for a basketball videogame. But this sweaty hangdown of a franchise name is paired with the overly pretentious and absurdly religious subtitle, “Chosen One”. Together, these two monikers accurately describe not only the game’s spectacularly gross and fun-deaf gameplay, but also the odor of cultish and overblown hero-worship emanating from the consumerist bling-bling subculture with which the NBA seems to be, err, consumed. To get the jarring discord, simply notice that the game’s title is synonymous with NBA Fuckers: The Second Coming of the Messiah.

[image1]Ballers is, of course, only following the lead of EA’s NBA Street franchise, which itself is modeled on the “street” ball hyped in the ubiquitous ESPN And1 Tour. But where both And1 and NBA Street (to a lesser extent) get both the histrionics and humor of the carnivalesque and fundamentals-abandoning showmanship of street basketball, Ballers humorlessly goes through the motions, as detached and lifeless as Wilt Chamberlain’s 19,999th lay must have been.

This is the setting of Iron Grip: Warlord, the first commercial game from Isotx. You play as one of the savagely independent Atelia warriors of Warlord Sahrab's army. The proud and noble animal known as the pinball game (Tommius Extraballus), which once dominated the watering holes of the North American continent, is now sadly close to extinction. Pushed aside by more advanced species, its natural habitat in decline, the pinball game is a dying breed. Rarely will the intrepid game-watcher spot one of these once-magificent creatures in the wild anymore, and what few remain are so worn down and scratched from years of abuse, so caked in grimy layers of pizza grease, cigarette smoke, and spilt beer, that they bear little resemblance to the noble beasts they once were. Fortunately, diligent game-ologists have spent countless hours working to recreate a simulation of those bygone days when pinball games ruled the Earth, a project known aptly and simply by the name Pinball: Hall of Fame.

Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3 - PS2 - GR Review

Who says ninjas have to be sneaky?

The diehards of animé-fandom live on the wavy fringes of society, in a land of Pocky-munching otaku and cosplayers poking one another with plastic shuriken. I’m not one to impose judgment, as I still play with tabletop miniatures (a.k.a. little plastic men), but animé and the games based off them have always been mysterious to outsiders. The gameplay always seems to fall under par, the in-jokes are meaningless, and the plot is usually equivalent to starting a Grisham thriller halfway through.

[image1]Naruto: Ultimate Ninja 3 is one of the few animé-based games that breaks the stereotype. The gameplay is easy to pick up, the character designs are amazing, and something about Naruto’s story is completely addicting. If you ever wanted to see what this Naruto business is about, UN3 is the perfect place to get your first taste, although it still won’t explain the appeal of gelling your hair into purple spikes.

Developed by Spidermonk Entertainment, Roogoo uses geometric shapes and rotating discs to craft a frenetic, exciting puzzle game framed within an imaginative storyline and a delightfully realised fantasy universe and is the second title SouthPeak have announced for Xbox LIVE Arcade for Xbox 360.

Roogoo tasks players with guiding meteors in the form of shaped blocks though a series of rotating disks as a means of saving the planet Roo and the entire Roogoo race. If aligned correctly, the disks allow the blocks to reach the ground and scores are awarded. However, it’s not as easy as simply rotating the disks to form a neat tunnel. Various obstacles and enemies will impede the blocks’ transit and with the flow of meteor blocks steadily increasing as the game progresses, players will have to think on their feet to save the Roogoo and rack up seriously high scores.
