Too nostalgic. How ironic.

I doubt there has ever been a title as perfectly fitting as Nostalgia. It is as traditional as a JRPG gets: You start as Gilbert Brown, adventurer extraordinaire, a man who travels the globe at a moment's notice to search for the greatest treasures of history. But as he's escaping from his latest discovery, he's lost somehow, and his son Eddie takes up the manhunt.

[image1]Along the way, he makes the acquaintance of other travelers, like the “troubled kid who needed saving”, the “girl who was saved by Dad”, “girl who wants revenge for her village”, and even “lady space pirate”, and travels to exotic, "real"-world locales. (The travelers' names are Pad, Fiona, Melody, and Scarlett respectively, but c'mon... no names with 'x's or 'z's? It's not a real JRPG without some messed-up names!) In other words, the story takes places in an alternate 1800s than the one in my old textbook. If school had been like this, I might've paid more attention.

While the 3D graphics is... well, DS-style, the environments and towns are well-detailed and pleasing to the eye. Each city is designed to fit their region, which is to be expected, though most of them still feel small much of the time; most are just a few shops and civilians, right next to a place to park your airship (nobody tickets airships, that's nice of them).

Crazy as a bat.

Axel & Pixel is a weird game, there's no denying. It's a mix between an adventure, a pixel hunter, quick-time events, and even driving games. While not doing any of these elements perfectly, this Frankenstein-like patched-together combination of genres with a crazy presentation is a dictionary-worthy and bizarre game.

[image1]Even the story is a messed up, convoluted, and nonsensical mess. Axel is an artist who lives in the middle of arctic nowhere with his dog, Pixel. One day, an imp decides to make their lives hell by nearly destroying their home and running away. For unclear motives, the duo decides to chase down the little demon in a journey into insanity.

In fact, by the time you complete the final level, 'insanity' will be the only word you can use to describe Axel & Pixel. Most of the game won't make much sense, but it still looks very cool at the same time. A cubist's dream, levels are comprised of single, large panels that are themselves montages of a variety of objects, sometimes drawn and static, sometimes including realistic-looking pictures. Every one of these panels provides a mission to be completed, which is rarely clear at first glance, due to how convoluted the levels are.

What’s in a name?

In 1215, a document called the Magna Carta (or “Great Charter” for those not fluent in Latin) required King John of England to give the free people of his kingdom certain rights such as allowing appeal to unlawful imprisonment. As “riveting” as this sounds (quotations added for sarcastic effect), the games of the same name have absolutely nothing to do with habeas corpus (in the game industry, “due process” is more of a QA thing I guess).

[image1]In 2005, Magna Carta: Tears of Blood came to North America and garnered mediocre reviews and a very small audience. It had problems aplenty, both technical and artistic. The combat was awkward and overly complicated, the camera flat-out sucked, and the story took hours to get, well, nowhere. Most of these problems have been alleviated, if not solved altogether, in Magna Carta 2.

Magna Carta 2 has about as much to do with the previous game in the series as the that game did with the actual Magna Carta (which is pretty much just the name, for those of you keeping score). The art style, the combat, the story - these are all head and shoulders above its predecessor. It has its flaws, but this is still a great game.

The story is pretty standard and most of the usual JRPG set pieces are here: Amnesiac protagonist? Check. Dethroned/wayfaring princess from a kingdom that needs saving? Check. Wise-cracking sidekicks? Check. Evil empire? Check. Obnoxious girl with bunny, elf, or cat ears? Check. Entire party being connected to each other as well as said empire by very contrived means? Check, ...
