Robin Williams (1951-2014) Robin Williams was an absolutely exceptional comedian, talented actor, and holder of a special place in video game history: He was the first really famous gamer I know of. I’m sure there were others, but they kept a comparatively low profile, unlike one...

Publisher: Working Designs
Release Date: October 26, 2000

Gungriffon Blaze takes you to the Post-Apocalyptic future, where you must complete six increasingly difficult missions in order to bring peace to the world. (Collect enough medals, and you will have access to a more advanced version of each mission, for a total of twelve possible scenarios.) You will begin by customizing your Armored Walking Gun System (AWGS) - your mech - with optional weapons and armor. As you advance, you will no longer be limited to outfitting a given mech; you will be able to select the body, as well. Depending on your mission, you might select the heavily armored German Sturm Panzer, or the lighter, more agile French Super Autruche.

As soon as you are outfitted, you will see remarkably lifelike footage of your mech as it leaves the base for battle. Once the mission begins, you will witness all of the action from the first-person perspectrive of the cockpit. The PS2 DualShock 2 analog control allows you to make precise, realistic movements - so realistic, in fact, that class 4F soldier-wannabes susceptible to motion sickness might want to think twice about playing on a large screen. DualShock 2 vibration keyed to the mayhem onscreen completes the environmental immersion.

As you fight to save the world, you will interact with both enemies and friends. Before you jeopardize your comrades with friendly fire, familiarize yourself with your mech's operation by completing the training exercise in Guam. Here, you are charged with destroying 30 enemies. Some attack in plain sight, some hide within buildings, and a few lurk in the hills or buzz overhead. Your state-of-the-art Mass Energy Detector will help you to hone in on them; it will also help you to differentiate between enemies and friends, when you are engaged in actual battle.

As you blow up buildings and annihilate your enemies, you will discover goods that will increase your firepower and repair damage to your mech. Some items will dull your enemies' response times; others will increase your score. You will also collect option boxes that may be exchanged for various options at the completion of each assignment. Four levels of difficulty, ranging from "Blaze Away" to "Hell," makes Gungriffon Blaze a pleasure for the novice and veteran gamer, alike.
