Hunter: The Reckoning is based on White Wolf's pen and paper game. The
Xbox game is set in a small prison town, where the prison itself has
become the center of evil and corruption. Some time ago, a group of
Vampires embraced the Warden and took over the prison as their personal
feeding grounds. They have spent years subjecting the inmates to unspeakable
experiments and tortures. The inmates that died within the prison walls
rose again as vengeful and destructive wraiths, uncaring of who or what
they destroyed. They were eventually subdued by powers greater than
them, and they slept, waiting for the chance to break their bonds.
Hunter is a game of action. The game carries the player through levels filled with 10-50 (approx.) monsters per scene. Hunter allows for a full combat system, combining melee, ranged and magic attacks. Each Hunter has several different animated attacks to make the game even more interesting. The Hunters have full range 3D motion. They can run in one direction and attack in completely different direction. The player controls their character from a third person view, using a medium, distance isometric perspective. The player is able to see the Hunter run, jump, dive, shoot, and interact with the environment. The focus of this game is action. Game play resembles that of Gauntlet Legends and Smash T.V. with the atmosphere similar to Resident Evil.
In Hunter, the player can take control of one of four Hunters. Each of the Hunters has different strengths and weapon selections. Each of the four Hunters have a distinct style and character, each catered to a different type of player. The Hunters advance as the players continue the game, but the advancement is predetermined. The Hunters have access to a wide array of weaponry, both modern and archaic.
Each Hunter has a default melee and ranged weapon that can be modified by power ups in game. In addition to weapons, each of the Hunters has an Edge (Hunter Magic Powers) that becomes more varied and powerful as the players progress. The Hunters are also able to find and use Glyphs (Glowing symbols on the ground) to regenerate lost health or other helpful powerups.
The levels in Hunter are gothic and decaying, staying true to the World of Darkness. The player has a wide area to run and fight. To vary gameplay, the levels have a variety of goals. Sometimes the Hunters have to kill things, sometime they have to escort an innocent person to safety, and sometimes, the Hunters have to run for their lives. Overall the game delivers an intense gameplay experience with strong horror elements. The player is able to save his progress at specific save points scattered throughout the game world.
Hunter also supports cooperative four-player multiplayer. The game scales its difficulty to accommodate the number of players in the game. New players can enter the game at any time and the characters they choose are scaled to the level as well. In cooperative mode, the players are able to interact and heal each other. A multiplayer game of Hunter offers new strategies as well as new challenges.
