The gameplay is a cross between strategy role-playing and collectible card games. The game features Player vs. Player matchmaking along with challenging single-player modes.

For multiplayer modes, players will select a hand of cards and battle head-to-head. There are currently 25 playable cards with many more planned. The cards in JollyGrim have a wide variety of unique skills which have a big impact on the outcome of any battle. Players can also hone their skills against an AI-controlled opponent.

JollyGrim also features a 15-hour single player campaign. The story follows a student of JollyGrim Academy named Will as he attempts to reclaim a precious school treasure that he has let get away from him. Players will meet plenty of strange characters along the way, many of whom will join Will on his quest. The story is humorous and lighthearted, but the battles will challenge your strategic-thinking skills.
