Destiny 2 Crossplay: When is Destiny 2 Cross-Platform Play Coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC?

Destiny 2 crossplay is now closer than ever. Following on from Sony going all-in on cross-platform play with Xbox One and PC users, fans have (rightfully) been clamoring for a chance to take Bungie’s shooter for a spin across various platforms. However, this isn’t as straightforward as you might think.

Destiny 2 Crossplay: When is Destiny 2 Cross-Platform Play Coming to PS4, Xbox One, and PC?

There is no release date for Destiny 2 crossplay but, as we’ve seen with Fortnite, these things don’t happen overnight. Sony’s recent announcement made pointed reference to looking to “open up the platform.” firmly stating:

“This represents a major policy change for SIE, and we are now in the planning process across the organization to support this change.”

It’s still early days, however. We’re at ground zero of a paradigm shift in the industry that could take months or even years to follow take hold. If Destiny 2 crossplay isn’t a thing, you can expect a Destiny 3 crossplay to be almost a guarantee, for example.

The best course of action, right now, is to wait. But don’t wait in silence. Let Bungie and Sony hear your voices, as well as Microsoft, too. The consumer is always king and, here, you’re in a position of great power when it comes to the floodgates being opened thanks to Fortnite. Everything’s fair game now.

Destiny 2 Crossplay: Is it Possible?

But, therein, lies the question of whether it’s possible. While the likes of Fortnite has an Epic Account to attach gamers to, regardless of platform, there is no such system in place for Bungie. Even Rocket League is attempting to introduce an Epic-style system when its PS4 crossplay goes live later in 2018 with its Rocket ID. For Destiny 2? Nothing.

As of right now, though, there is no conceivable way, trick, or workaround to make Destiny 2 crossplay reality. It’s disappointing, but that’s how it is. Besides, the persistently-online servers would make the logistics of such an undertaking highly impractical.

But there’s hope. There’s always hope. Xbox vice president Mike Ybarra seemingly broke rank with a Tweet about wanting Destiny 2 cross-play with Xbox One players facing off against PC and PS4 players. A poll was included, yes or no, and you could guess what the answer was The public, inevitably, chose yes. A whopping 83% of people are in favor of Destiny 2 cross-play, and Bungie is more than game for it too.

During a Q&A with Game Informer, Bungie’s Steve Cotton and Scott Taylor were hopeful that a Destiny 2 crossplay deal could be struck at some point in the future but, as of right now, no plans are in place for that to happen.

Still, this is all better than nothing. The pieces are in play: Microsoft and Bungie sound keen and, even if the notoriously cross-play shy Sony isn’t intent on joining the party, there’s plenty of straws for us to clutch on to, especially when the likes of Fortnite can pull it off with relative ease.
