Use this guide to discover if you can play the new dungeon-crawler with friends across different consoles or not.
Is Minecraft Dungeons cross-platform?
At launch, Minecraft Dungeons is not cross-platform. You cannot play with others across different consoles, on the PC, PS4, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch. As of writing, there is no Minecraft Dungeons cross-platform play. There is good news, however. Mojang is actively looking to enable cross-platform play across all available platforms.
According to the official Minecraft Dungeons help page, a goal of Mojang “is to let everyone play together regardless of platform.” This will be added “in a future game update.” Unfortunately, no time-frame has been given. All we know is that at some point after the game launches, a free update will be provided to allow Minecraft Dungeons crossplay across the PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
Once the update lands, you will be able to play the game in online co-op with anyone, no matter what platform they’re playing on. Mojang has confirmed, however, that it will add crossplay, not cross-saves, to the game. As per the help page, “save files and game progress do not transfer across platforms.” This means that your save file and game progress will be tied to the platform you play the game on at first. You cannot transfer save files between the four platforms.
Hopefully, we will get cross-platform play in Minecraft Dungeons sooner rather than later. Time will tell how long we’ll have to wait for the promised update. For now, you’re stuck with other players on the same platform for online co-op.
