DC Universe Online was initially released way back in 2011 and Daybreak Game Company is still developing massive content for the free-to-play MMO. Daybreak and WB Games have announced that the DC Universe Online Atlantis expansion will be coming in November, only a month before the highly-anticipated release of the Aquaman movie in December. The Atlantis expansion will actually be the 33rd episode for the game to date.
According to the official site, it looks like the Atlantis expansion will be loosely based on very recent developments in the ongoing Aquaman comic book series. It will be a large-scale episode featuring singleplayer and multiplayer adventures in the undersea kingdom for the very first time in the game, as well as offering new player rewards, gear, styles, base items, and feats.
Fans of the comics will be happy to learn that there will a lot of new characters in the Atlantis expansion besides Aquaman, Mera, Aqualad and Ocean Master. These include new heroes and villains like Murk and Corum Rath. The story description states that players will have to stop a rebellion by Corum Rath and his Deluge conspirators. DC Universe Online Creative Director SJ Mueller said: “ATLANTIS y’all. I know everyone – me included – has been wanting to visit Aquaman and Mera’s home, and I’m so glad we get to finally take the plunge. The team is going all out on this one, just like we did with Teen Titans, and it’s going to be a blast.”
As a comic book fan, it’s great to see content like this still being produced for games. It’s not easy for comic book games to stand out, especially considering that the recent San Diego Comic Con only had The Walking Dead The Final Season and Spider-Man to show for it. There’s a lot more source material out there ripe for a video game adaptation.
