Best for All Ages

In case you’ve been living under a rock, you know that Fruit Ninja is one of the most popular arcade and online games ever created. The concept is simple enough: a bunch of fruit is thrown across the screen, and you have to slice it in half with your Samurai sword before it falls. PlayStation has taken this classic and adapted it for virtual reality. Now, you work with two swords instead of one, which allows you to jab, skewer, flick fruit, and even deflect bombs. The PS4 VR version also comes with a brand new mode in addition to Classic. Called Zen and Arcade: Survival, this mode has you facing off against fruit-shooting helicopters. It’s an addictive game for kids and adults alike.

Pros:

  • Play levels from Novice to Expert
  • Loads fast
  • Easy to play

Cons:

  • Not a lot of content (aside from slicing fruit)
  • Requires ample play space

VR Worlds

Worlds Of Fun

Containing 5 games in 1, VR Worlds has enough action to keep you enchanted for hours.
Best Action

VR Worlds for the PS4 is like an “action sampler” for virtual reality. It’s actually 5 games in 1 package, including The London Heist, Ocean Descent, VR Luge, Scavenger’s Odyssey, and Danger Ball. Each game has its own world of thrills. Whether it’s racing down city roads on a street luge, taking a journey to the bottom of the ocean, or immersing yourself in London’s gritty, criminal underground, each world is an adventure. Our favorite was Scavenger’s Odyssey, where you climb aboard an all-terrain alien craft, explore a mysterious nebula, and try to recover an extremely valuable ancient artifact. There’s a little something for every action buff with this one.

Pros:

  • Wide variety of graphic styles
  • 5 fully-immersive environments
  • Great example of VR’s capabilities

Cons:

  • A lot of dizzying movement
  • Could use more levels within each game

Everybody’s Golf VR

Take A Swing At It

Everybody's Golf VR is so accurate and realistic it may improve your golf swing.
Best Sports Game

Another one of the great promises of virtual reality is the feeling of playing your favorite sports – or trying out new ones. Though Everybody’s Golf VR features animated graphics, the gameplay with the controllers in hand is so accurate to the game of golf, it could improve your game. If you’ve got a slice, the ball will slice. If your chip is fat, the ball will soar off the green. The game not only features three incredible courses but comes with your own caddie, who’s more than willing to give you swing tips (whether you want them or not). You can even practice on the driving range or hit a few puts on the putting green.

Pros:

  • Projects distances to green and hole
  • Your bag has a full set of clubs
  • Easy to learn controls

Cons:

  • Must level up to unlock other courses
  • Weather conditions are random

Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality

Morty-fied

For fans of the legendary animated show, Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality is a hilarious, high-octane, and wildly inappropriate ride.
Best M-Rated Game

Find on Amazon

Ever since its cable television debut in 2013, Rick & Morty has become a cult classic. PlayStation brings the madness to virtual life with Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality. Fully voiced by the original Rick and Morty actors, the game involves you following Rick through multiple strange dimensions, helping with tasks like fixing an intergalactic car, and smashing iconic items like the Plumbus. You can even hang out in Rick’s garage and check out his latest experiments. Of course, it has all the crude humor of the TV show – hence the rating – but that’s what makes it fun.

Pros:

  • You get to fight aliens and drink detergent
  • No show spoilers
  • Lots of hidden items

Cons:

  • Not a lot of playtime
  • Easy to go out of bounds

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between the second version of the PlayStation VR headset and the first?

V2, which was released three years after V1, supports “high dynamic range passthrough,” meaning that games supporting the wider range of colors found on a 4K television feed their signal through the headset to the TV, “passing through” the VR kit. The high dynamic range is not supported on the VR’s internal screen – it simply means that you don’t have to unplug everything and readjust the wires in order to play a standard game with high dynamic range enabled. Again, the screen inside the headset didn’t change: there were no improvements to resolution, tracking-screen clarity, or anything else.

What’s the future of virtual reality? Are these graphics going to get better?

With the way the technology is heading, the future for VR is amazing. By 2030, the virtual, augmented, and mixed reality market is estimated to be worth tens of billions of dollars. Some tech companies are already working to develop cable-less headsets that will allow images to be seen in Hi-Def. Virtual Reality headsets should reach 8K resolution with powerful new processors and with the advent of 5G, VR communities could be able to communicate with zero latency.
