Tomb Raider film sequel hits the ground running with new writer

Although the new Tomb Raider movie didn’t quite do as gangbusters at the box office, it wasn’t a bomb either. It made $58 million domestically and did well overseas, leading to $274 million worldwide. And apparently, that’s more than enough for the studio to start looking into Tomb Raider film sequel as it just got its writer.

Deadline has confirmed that a screenwriter has been brought on for the potential sequel, joining the returning Alicia Vikander. Vikander reportedly liked the script she saw from Amy Jump, who will script the tale. Although, its story hasn’t been revealed just yet.

Jump originally made her debut in 2011 with the film Kill List, and then provided an adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s High-Rise just a few years later. Her latest effort, the assassin-laden Free Fire, features Sharlto Copley and Brie Larson, directed by her husband, Ben Wheatley.

Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Alastair Siddons wrote the script for the first film that came out in 2018. That film currently holds a 52% on Rotten Tomatoes. And while its origin story was not as inspired, Vikander’s role as Lara Croft was, according to critics. She showcased a different, less serious side than Angelina Jolie did back in 2001 and was the highlight of a rather tepidly received film.

There’s no word yet if director Roar Uthaug will return to helm the next Tomb Raider film, but it’s still quite a ways off from getting to the silver screen. As for the tone, it’s likely to be close to what Rise of the Tomb Raider did in 2015. Considering that the movie followed Croft as she was just getting started, the sequel should show her with more confidence. Oh, and of course, her trademark twin pistols, which you saw at the end of the film.

It’ll be a while before we see production get started, though. The film is still very early in pre-production and a release date hasn’t been announced.
