God of War Director Reacting to Reviews is the Sweetest Thing

God of War director Cory Barlog has every right to be pleased as punch right now. His critically-acclaimed new game has been hailed as one of the very best first-party PS4 games, and it’s been receiving incredibly high scores across a variety of outlets, including GameRevolution. When the embargoes for reviews lifted earlier this week, Cory marked the occasion by filming his reaction to them, and if it isn’t the sweetest thing we’ve seen this week then we don’t know what is.

God of War currently sits at a whopping 95% on Metacritic, though when Cory recorded his reaction it jumped from 93% to 94%. In the video, a tearful and clearly stunned Cory explains how he was “lucky” to work with his team at Sony’s Santa Monica Studio, explaining that they had put in “a lot of work, and a lot of faith.”

But the pleasantries don’t end there, as keeping in theme with God of War‘s tale of parental struggles, Cory explained in the video’s description how he decided to upload the clip to YouTube in order to convince his son to be more open with emotions.

“So, I thought a lot about whether or not to upload but then I thought of what my son, Helo, is going through right now,” Cory wrote. “He doesn’t want us to be around when he is sad, opting to run in another room and yell at us if we try to come in. It has been important to us to let him know that it is OK to be sad, it is OK to cry. There is nothing to hide.”

I thought I would try to set a good example and show him that papa can cry in front of the world, or at least the 50 people who end up watching this,” Cory continued. “This is for you, Helo. Papa loves you.”

Stop, Cory! You’re killing us! But in a nice, wholesome way — not the skull-crushing, God of War way.
