Resident Evil 2 launch trailer arrives with only days to go before release

With only a few days to go before Resident Evil 2’s release, Capcom has put out the launch trailer for the highly anticipated remake of the 1998 thriller.

The trailer, which you can see below, shows a familiar image to those that played the original: Zombies patrolling around Raccoon City, people being told to barricade themselves within the city’s police station, and of course, main characters Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield.

Following the remake of Resident Evil way back in 2002, the intention was always to follow with a full remake of the second game. However, it wasn’t until 2015 that Capcom officially announced that a remake was underway. News and information regarding the Resident Evil 2 remake was scarce until last year’s E3 conference when Capcom released the first trailer and gameplay footage.

The game is a modern retelling of the 1998 original, using the engine used from Resident Evil 7 to create new chills and scare tactics for modern day audiences. The game also uses “global totals and trends” similar to games such as the The Walking Dead that tracks character decisions.

A demo was released back on January 11 and will run through the end of the month. The demo is playable only for 30 minutes and allows multiple replays if cleared under the thirty minute mark, but doesn’t allow for any further gameplay after.

A number of reviews have already popped up ahead of Resident Evil 2‘s release. The PlayStation 4 version of the game currently averages an 89 on Metacritic. GameRevolution has given the remake a 5/5, praising how it captures the spirit of the original.

Capcom is expecting the game to be a million dollar seller upon release. Given the warm reception, it seems likely that the studio will continue to work on more remakes in the future. In its latest financial report, the longtime game developer says they expect to “to explore [remakes of older titles] further with a variety of properties as a part of our strategy to utilize our library of IP.”

Resident Evil 2 will be out for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on January 25.
