Was Titanfall 3 put on hold for Respawn to make Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order?

Respawn Entertainment has kept rather busy as of late. The team has done exceptionally well with the battle royale hit Apex Legends. And it just recently announced Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, set to release later this year. But there may have been another little project that the team was hard at work on – possibly Titanfall 3.

While speaking with Press Start, game director Stig Asmussen confirmed the team was involved with another project before Star Warscame up. I think it started with EA approaching us at Respawn, and asking. I had a team, we were working on a game, and they said, ‘What do you guys think about Star Wars?'”

Immediately, Asmussen knew the right way to go. And unanimously, my team hands down, everybody was interested in working on a Star Wars, even though we were really interested in the other game that we were working on, we saw this as an opportunity. It’s like, ‘Hey, when are you ever going to get a chance to work on a Star Wars game?'”

But it did take a while to hit the ground running with Lucasfilm. “It was several months before we even met with Lucasfilm. I’m assuming that you guys knew that we were signed on, but it was probably four months or something, at least, where that we knew that we were going to be working on it, and we started coming up with what our own ideas. What we could bring to the table at least from a gameplay standpoint.”

That said, we do come back to a certain point of interest – what the team worked on before Jedi Fallen Order. Asmussen didn’t mention Titanfall 3 by name. However, considering the success of that game – even though it came out a week after Battlefield 1 hit the market – and how much it resonates with the community, it just makes sense.

The real question here is if the team will return to whatever this project was after it finishes up work on Jedi Fallen Order. Fingers crossed that this’ll be the case.

Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order releases on November 15 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
