Pokemon 25th anniversary cards give us an oversized Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur

The Pokemon TCG is getting eight sets of oversized cards to celebrate the series’ starters. Each “Train On: First Partner Pack” relates to a different region and generation of the video game. The Pokemon 25th anniversary cards will release monthly, starting this March.

First up is a Galar-themed trading card pack that stars Grookey, Sobble, and Scorbunny from Pokemon Sword and Shield. Each of the subsequent card sets relates to a prior generation, before eventually culminating with the release of a Kanto collection featuring the iconic trio of Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur.

Each pack includes three oversized vintage starter cards, all featuring classic artwork. They do now feature the Pokemon 25th anniversary logo, however, so don’t quite maintain a 100% faithful look. Two standard booster packs also come bundled with each set of Pokemon TCG 25th anniversary cards, though it isn’t yet clear which expansion they belong to. As a result, players’ mileage may vary when it comes to using them in matches.

With some classic Pokemon cards fetching thousands at auction, the eight 25th anniversary card packs are likely to be popular amongst both hardcore collectors and casuals.

Pokemon Go proved that lapsed fans still have a lot of affection for the franchise. Even now, the popular mobile game is introducing new challenges and gameplay meta in 2021.
