The Monster Hunter Now longsword (or long sword) is a strong upgrade from the starting sword and shield. While you can’t guard using the longsword as you can with the sword and shield, you can still evade quite easily while in the middle of the combo. It doesn’t deal as much damage as the greatsword, but the attack speed allows you to deliver a lot of strikes in a short amount of time. You will unlock the longsword at Hunter Rank 15.
The main feature of the longsword is the Spirit Gauge, which is shaped like a sword near the bottom of the screen. This gauge fills as you deal damage, but depletes over time and when you get hit by monsters. You need to have this gauge fill completely to gain access to a counter attack called the Iai Spirit Slash. If you have a red Spirit Gauge, you can also tap the screen after doing this special slash to deal a Helm Breaker that deals a huge amount of damage.
