State of Decay 2 Sees a Million Players in First Week

Zombies may have a hunger for brains but Xbox and PC players have a hunger for zombie survival sims. State of Decay 2 has seen one million players in its first week of release. The game came out on May 18th for those who bought the Ultimate Edition and May 22nd for everyone else.

In its blog post, Microsoft claims State of Decay 2 had one million players in its first “two days of global release,” but that is a little misleading. Since the game came out on May 18th for Ultimate Edition owners, it really took the game about a week to hit a million players. It’s still an impressive feat, just one that needs to be clarified first.

This news came with some stats for the game. There have been over six million gameplay hours and 3.5 million hours of streams across Twitch, Mixer, and YouTube over 41,000 unique broadcasts. Players have killed over 675 million zombies, thrown over six million firecrackers, and eaten over six million bags of snacks. Most players also typically survived for three days.

State of Decay 2‘s “record-breaking” one million players in “two days of global release” is a little confusing because it isn’t clear exactly what the record is. Microsoft makes no mention of the record in the article. We’ve reached out to Microsoft and will update the story if or when we get a more accurate answer.

The blog post came with an acknowledgment of the game’s bugs and glitches. Microsoft said they have “addressed and will continue to address them as we hear more from players.” Our review, along with many others, mentioned the game’s numerous technical hiccups that noticeably dampened the overall experience.

The first State of Decay was also a success for developer Undead Labs and Microsoft. The game sold over 4.5 million copies since its initial release in 2013, according to the game’s official website. The original version came out on Xbox 360 in 2013 and its Year One Survival Edition came out in 2015 on PC and Xbox One.
