Jason Sudeikis-led Ted Lasso Ties Last Year’s Emmy Award Nominations Tally with 20 Nods for 2022

It seems Ted Lasso’s second trip to the pitch was just as sweet as the first, as the feel-good, fish-out-of-water football comedy starring Jason Sudeikis as the titular premier league coach has snagged a total of 20 Emmy nominations. The series’ first season, which ran in 2020, pulled off the same feat, scoring 20 nominations to become the most-nominated freshmen comedy in Emmy history. It won seven of those awards at the 2021 Prime Time Emmy Awards, including trophies for Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Lead Actor for Sudeikis. Which awards are Ted Lasso and its stars up for this year, and can they beat last year’s haul? Read on to find out.

Which Emmy awards has Ted Lasso and its star Jason Sudeikis been nominated for?

Ted Lasso’s first, 10-episode season scored big with critics and fans alike, earning 20 Emmy nominations — a new record for a freshmen comedy — and ultimately taking home seven awards. The popular Apple TV+ series’ second season has tied its predecessor for nominations, again racking up 20 nods ahead of the 2022 awards show. Many of those nominations are duplicates of last year’s wins, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series for Sudeikis, Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series for Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca Welton,) and Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series for Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent.) But some newer AFC Richmond members will also be getting their first shot at statues this year, including Toheeb Jimoh, who played Sam Obisanya, and Sarah Niles, who played Dr. Sharon Fieldstone. Ted Lasso vets Juno Temple and Nick Mohammed, who play Keeley Jones and Nathan Shelley, respectively, will also get a second chance at wins this year. And given the latter’s villainous turn at the close of season two, he just might pull it off.

Ted Lasso’s odds are looking pretty good, as it holds the most nominations for a comedy series this year. Still, stiff competition from critical darlings, such as Barry, Hacks, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, could spell trouble for the beloved soccer, er, football comedy. Hopefully Ted’s “Believe” philosophy will help score some wins when awards are handed out in September. Regardless, we can’t wait to tune into season 3 when Ted and his team return to the pitch, hopefully, later this year.
