Halo 5: Guardians is just a few weeks away from its October 27 release. In the lead-up to launch we're taking a look back on the entire series and all the wonderful things it has brought to console first person shooters. This time, we're combing through its massive library of multiplayer maps, many of which have gone on to become some of the most iconic and well designed arenas the genre has ever seen.
So, without further ado, here are our five favorites.

5. Ascension
As far as asymmetrical maps go, Ascension is one of Halo's best. Having first appeared in Halo 2, this expertly designed arena features everything you could want from a competitive map. It's got a shotgun tucked away on one corner, a rocket launcher on the opposite side, and, of course, snipers in close proximity to the two opposing towers. rn rnAs such, it goes without saying that Ascension is home to some incredibly dynamic firefights, especially when you've got someone piloting a Banshee overhead. It caters to virtually every type of play style, with plenty of narrow spaces for the close-quarters combat, as well as larger open areas and high points for range-minded folks. -
4. Zanzibar
Oh Zanzibar, how I love you. There's really no other map out there quite like it. Not only is it perfect for an intense match of Team Slayer, it also serves nicely as an arena for a few rounds of Capture the Flag. The fact that it's gorgeous to look at doesn't hurt either. rn rnWith a giant rotating turbine smack dab in its center and an Energy Sword hidden at its core, there are lots of little goodies tucked away within the recess of its unique structures. No two rounds are ever the same on this map, and that's truly a testament to the creative genius of its designers. Toss in a Warthog and Ghost and you've got the perfect recipe for all sorts of fun-filled chaos. A true classic. -
1. Lockout
You'd be hard pressed to find a better multiplayer map across any first-person shooter. Period. Lockout is a work of pure genius. Halo 2 is undoubtedly the best multiplayer shooter on the original Xbox and this carefully crafted arena is a major reason why. I spent hours upon hours of my life battling against my friends on this map. Honestly, if you tallied up the time I spent in Lockout alone, it's probably more than my time with most other games.

rnFrom its asymmetrical design to its careful power weapon placement and sight lines, there's so much depth to this tight and focused map. Its elegantly simple design is a work of pure art, and learning all of its tricks only helps you to appreciate it even more. -
3. Beaver Creek
As far as small outdoor maps go, there aren't many better than Beaver Creek. It's got a base on either side, with a large rocky archway splitting it down the middle. With a rocket launcher perched atop its peak, you can bet there have been more than a few explosive battles in the race for map dominance. rn rnDon't forget that there are teleportation gates behind each base, too, allowing players to sneak up on the other team from behind. Thanks to these careful design decisions, there's never a lull or dull moment when you're battling on this map. As someone with an impatient and action-minded play style, it's a personal favorite. -
2. Midship
There's a reason why this alien map is being remade for Halo 5: Guardians. This glowing purple arena has been a favorite of fans ever since its inception, and rightly so. Those looking for a competitive-minded playing field can't do much better than Midship. Heck, even casual newbies like myself can find a lot to love.

rnThanks to its symmetrical design and perfect power weapon placement (with the Energy Sword set atop the map's upper level), those looking to test their skills against other pros will feel right at home here. Fortunately for directionally-challenged folks like myself, it's incredibly easy to navigate as well. Plus, it doesn't hurt that Midship is easy on the eyes, distinguishing itself from your typical military-minded battlefield.
