Fenix Rage Preview

Hard as hell but worth the recipe.

I sincerely love that Fenix Rage has been making such a significant comeback in the world of gaming. The possibilities for new and awesome experiences are multiple-times higher than it's been even in the previous PS3/360 generation, and yet we're continuing to find and play great retro-inspired titles.

In the spirit of games like Super Meat Boy, the new Fenix Rage is a classic-styled "holy crap, this is gonna make me hate myself" side-scroller goodness. Move from point A to point B—it's as simple as that. Sure, there's a "story," but there's only enough to keep moving forward.

Throughout each stage are a plethora of both stationary and moving bad-fellas who can slay with a touch, so the minutiae of jump height and dash distance make all of the difference throughout each level (even the early ones). With over 200 levels to traverse and a number of bosses to conquer—and one of the demo stages looking strangely familiar to the TMNT dam level—there's plenty to time and balance through.

Jumping and speed-dash (which can break through most walls) are easy and infinite, being chained together however many times it takes to time things just right.  And you have to watch those movements… one small misstep and you're back at the start in punishing fashion.

But what actually makes it all better is the amount of cookies dropped throughout which lead to another challenge. Collecting them all earns you an awesome reward at the end: a real-life cookie.  Not made and presented via your CD tray (because I'm old and that's the visual that pops into my head) which would be awesome, but you receive a cookie recipe. How great the recipe is depends on how many cookies you collect in-game.

Dammit, now I want a cookie, and I already eated the one they gave me. Guess I'll have to go back and ask for another. The game comes out Fall of this year, so there should be plenty of cookies to go around. Fenix Rage will release for Xbox One and PS4.
