PS4 Is Now at 40 Million Units Sold, On-Track to Break 100 Million

Every time sales information has released for the PS4, it's been nothing but positive news. Even now when the market has declined during the past fiscal quarter, Sony has managed to continue its dominance.

Sony's latest financial document for fiscal year ending March 31st, 2016 confirms a total of 40 million PS4s sold worldwide. Although this figure doesn't account for sold-through to consumer, it's a massive number that dwarfs the pacing of all but three game consoles in the history of gaming: the PS2, PS1, and Wii.

In regards to this generation, Microsoft's Xbox One sits at around 20 million units sold, and the Nintendo Wii U is stuck at around 13 million. As such, Sony currently controls more than 50% of the current home console market, continuing in the footsteps of its first two consoles.

Sony plans to bolster its software portfolio with several attractive products by the end of 2016, including The Last Guardian, Persona 5, and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. It will also break into the virtual reality space with its PlayStation VR, which sold out within minutes of becoming available for pre-order.

In addition, there are rumors that it plans to release a new model of PS4 code named "Neo" that comes equipped with significantly more powerful hardware. With each of this, in addition to continued reduction of console pricing of its current model, Sony is positioned to retain its spot as market leader, and doesn't appear to be facing serious challenge until March of next year when Nintendo debuts its highly-anticipated NX console.
