What Did Sony Learn From PlayStation 3’s Lacking Launch Lineup?

The launch of Sony's latest handheld device is almost upon us. It's easy to lust after the PlayStation Vita's sleek designs and full list of features. Look at it! It's begging for fingerprints! You could make the argument that the promise of its design is just as enticing as the PlayStation 3's original feature set.

Still, when it comes down to launch day and the sales figures people love to argue over, the real strength of the Vita is in its software lineup. Let's face it, the early days of gaming on the PlayStation 3 were long considered… a joke.

Clearly, that's why the Vita has received a 40% bump in launch day software. Not counting downloadable PSN titles (because the PlayStation 3 didn't have any of those either), the PS3 launched with only 12 games, most of which were sports titles. The Vita is launching with 20 retail games, 5 from Sony first-party studios and 15 from third-party publishers.

The most notable addition? An established AAA franchise will be sitting on store shelves with Sony's PlayStation Vita on launch day. Naughty Dog's Uncharted series has undoubtedly come to define the PlayStation 3 in the US. Clearly Sony hopes to set the Vita off on the right foot with a portable version of the action/adventure series.

There's one thing we can say about the PS3's launch lineup. Who could forget Mobile Suit Gundam: Crossfire? The answer is 'Everyone'.
