Motorola Will Have Xbox 360 And Windows 7 Banned In Germany

Motorola Mobility will effectively have the Xbox 360, Windows 7, Internet Explorer, and Windows Media Player banned in Germany, after it was granted an injunction against their distribution.

The ruling states that Microsoft has "infringed two patents necessary to offer H.264 video coding and playback", though it won't be able to enforce the action in the US until the US court "considers the matter next week".

Essentially, Motorola claims that Microsoft needed to get licenses from them for "about 50" of their intellectual properties. Microsoft states that this would be ridiculous and would cost about $4 billion, with a spokesman replying:

This is one step in a long process, and we are confident that Motorola will eventually be held to its promise to make its standard essential patents available on fair and reasonable terms for the benefit of consumers who enjoy video on the web. Motorola is prohibited from acting on today's decision, and our business in Germany will continue as usual while we appeal this decision and pursue the fundamental issue of Motorola's broken promise.

A hearing is scheduled for May 7, and the German case will likely "be considered by the European Commission".
