Dragon Ball FighterZ Has Loot Boxes That You Can Only Earn By Playing

Dragon Ball FighterZ uses loot boxes, though Bandai Namco has taken a different approach compared to EA by only allowing players to earn them in-game, rather than asking them to cough up real cash.

Earlier today, fighting game fans grew concerned after it was reported that Dragon Ball FighterZ was set to contain loot boxes. The rumor sprouted up from images shared online by players who had obtained an early copy of the game.

News of the loot boxes first emerged on the Reset Era forums, where a player explained how they had obtained skins for their in-game items from loot boxes. These loot boxes can reportedly be purchased using two forms of currency, Zeni and Premium Z coins, which are both earned by playing the game.

However, with the implementation of loot boxes in games going hand-in-hand with microtransactions, many believed that Bandai was going to go down that path for Dragon Ball FighterZ. Fortunately, the publisher has confirmed this won’t be the case.

In confirmation given to Attack of the Fanboy, Bandai has stated that Zenni can only be earned through gameplay, with this currency used to purchase the loot boxes. Z Coins are earned when players trade in duplicate items they’ve earned from loot boxes, meaning they cannot be purchased, either.

Considering that many publishers are figuring out new ways of introducing microtransactions into their games, it’s nice to see Bandai Namco sticking strictly to allowing players to earn in-game items by actually playing the game. Dragon Ball FighterZ is set to release on PS4, Xbox One and PC on January 26th.
