Mega PlayStation 4 Update Coming Soon [Update: Release Date Announced]

[Update 2] Sony has confirmed that gamers in North America will be getting the 1.70 update on the same day as those in Europe, April 30th.

[Update] Sony has announced that its sizeable 1.70 update for PlayStation 4 will launch on April 30th in Europe. Stay tuned for official word on when it will be available for those in North America; though, one can only expect it will be available right around the same time.

[Original] Sony's next firmware update for PlayStation 4 is a big one.

Firmware 1.70 serves up a whole bunch of exciting additions for the PlayStation faithful, the first of which is SHAREfactory, a "new rich video editor app for PS4 that makes it easy for you to customize your gameplay videos." You'll be able to upload your videos to Facebook or even export them to an external USB storage device.

PlayStation 4 gamers will also be pleased to hear that the 1.70 update also allows you to turn off HDCP, "enabling you to capture video directly from your HDMI output so you can record and share longer clips of your gameplay sessions." This has been a feature many fans have been clamoring for, so it's nice to see Sony finally deliver on this promise.

Finally, this forthcoming update adds auto pre-download support, "which allows you to pre-download your select pre-ordered game up to several days prior to release." This feature "will automatically pre-download your pre-ordered game so you can play as soon as the game is unlocked on release day." That'll come in handy, eh?

There's no specific release date for the update, but Sony promises that it's coming "soon." Stay tuned for more details. In the meantime, try to wrap your head around the fact that over 7 million PS4s have already been sold.
