CD Projekt has announced GOG Galaxy, a DRM-free gaming platform comparable to Valve's beloved PC gaming service, Steam.
The major appeal of GOG Galaxy lies in its consumer-friendly approach to PC gaming. Users are not required to be online to play their games, unlike other services, where users need to maintain an internet connection in order to authenticate ownership of the title they're playing.
In addition, GOG Galaxy will feature a cross-play option, allowing users to play with friends on other services, like Steam.
Whether or not it will prove to be a worthy competitor to Valve's online platform remains to be seen, but there's a good chance CD Projekt's flexible and consumer-oriented approach could help push PC gaming to new heights. At the very least, it may get companies like Valve, EA, and Ubisoft rethinking their online strategies.
