New iPhone Game Is Controlled by Apple AirPods

The world of technology is constantly evolving, as evidenced by developer Ali Tanis’ latest creation. The Turkish software engineer recently launched the world’s first AirPods-controlled game, titled RidePods: Race with Head, where users can leverage their Apple earphones to play the said video game on their iPhones and iPads.

RidePods becomes first iPhone game that can be controlled by AirPods

Creating history by becoming the first game one can play using Apple AirPods, the gameplay of Ali Tanis’ invention is relatively simple. It involves players steering a speeding motorcycle through traffic.

However, in RidePods, you can control the vehicle’s direction by moving your head left and right, while wearing your AirPods, rather than maneuvering your iPhone or swiping on the screen.

It is worth noting that the game only supports AirPods that come with the Spatial Audio feature, as per The Verge. At the time of writing, the range of Apple earphones that come with Spatial Audio includes the AirPods Pro, the AirPods Max, and the third and fourth generations of AirPods.

This is because Spatial Audio utilizes the accelerometer and gyroscope present in the aforementioned models to trace the movements of the user’s head. This is to calculate the position of the audio in a precise manner.

The RidePods game is currently in a nascent stage, and iPhone users may stumble upon several glitches while playing it. Moreover, the game does not feature any curves or turns on the road. This makes the gameplay quite mundane after some time. Nevertheless, it offers a brand new experience to players and responds efficiently to its unique control setup.

Users can also enjoy the game with just one earbud. Additionally, players who wish to use their AirPods as a handheld controller can do so by switching off the Automatic Head or Ear Detection setting. RidePods allows gamers to choose between a first-person and a third-person view, and also contains a record function.
