Would you buy a Nintendo Switch Pro? | Tell GR

Nintendo is reportedly working on a Switch Pro, which will provide us with an updated version of the home/handheld console hybrid. Though Nintendo hasn’t confirmed its existence, the Switch Pro will allegedly offer a high-end alternative to the Switch, playing games at higher resolutions with a higher frame rate, while also making design improvements to the system.

We were massively impressed by the Switch Lite, calling it “one of the best handhelds ever made,” but are we as sold on the idea of a pricier Switch Pro? We shared our thoughts below, and as always we want you to leave your opinions in the comments section. We’ll feature our favorite response in tomorrow’s Tell GR!

Paul Tamburro, executive editor: “Absolutely. With the PS5 and Xbox Series X launching this year, the Switch will need an upgrade for its cross-platform games to look the part. While I’m perfectly content with my regular ol’ Switch, getting a newer model with increased battery life, a larger screen, and improved Joy-Cons would be an offer I couldn’t refuse. At the right price, I’d pick up a Switch Pro on day one.”

Michael Leri, features editor: “I’m not sure if a Switch Pro is for me. Ironically, I was initially waiting for one since there were so many reports of ports running poorly. But after realizing that I don’t use my Switch Lite as a port machine, the prospect became a lot less appealing. Portability is nice but, in addition to the dreaded Switch tax, games don’t usually control as well as their console counterparts, killing the drive for me to grab more games on that system. I mainly use it to play Switch exclusives, which already run well for the most part, so unless some drastic change happens inside me, it’ll probably stay that way.”

Jason Faulkner, senior editor: “I would buy a Switch Pro in a heartbeat. The Switch Lite being cheaper is cool and all, but I think it’s weird Nintendo went that direction instead of releasing a new version of the Switch that enhances its capabilities instead of one that removes some of them. It’d be awesome to get a new, more powerful SKU that maybe upscales to 4K. I’d even settle for hardware powerful enough to run games at 1080p at 60 fps. The Switch has some amazing titles that are somewhat handicapped by the console’s inability to run them without hiccups. Hell, Nintendo could even go the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro route and enhance older titles for the Switch Pro to sweeten the deal.”
