In this June 14 edition of Retro Ad Replay, we’re traveling back seven years to when The Last of Us first launched on PS3. Players controlled Joel, a survivor of the zombie apocalypse, tasked with escorting Ellie across dangerous terrain where zombies and enemy survivors lay in wait. In addition to the single-player, The Last of Us also had “Factions” multiplayer, which featured survival elements like crafting as two teams fought to the death.
On July 29, 2014, The Last of Us Remastered launched for the PS4, with overhauled visuals that could be creatively captured using the new Photo Mode. A higher frame-rate, advanced audio options, and more were also included in the remastered edition.
The original GameRevolution The Last of Us review awarded the game a 5/5, praising “Joel and Ellie,” “the extreme violence and tension,” “redefining survival horror gameplay,” “entertaining multiplayer,” and being “highly cinematic and engrossing.”
Here’s a snippet from the GR review:
That sound, the one you’ll hear in dark abandoned cellars and subways, will absolutely haunt you. To think that the studio that once made CRASH BANDICOOT a household name has revitalized and redefined the survival horror genre will surprise you, but there it is. In atmosphere and narrative, Naughty Dog knows few barriers, and turning their talent and craftsmanship to such haunting and profound subject matter will ensure that the developer is poised to continue its dominance as a premier auteur development studio well into the next generation of console hardware.
