Stardew Valley Marriage Guide: How to Marry or Divorce Your Favorite Person

Stardew Valley lets you not only turn your very own farm into whatever you’d like, but also, marry your favorite waifu or husbando in town. The game doesn’t explicitly state how to do it and where to get everything you need, which is where we come in. Before we go any further, though, here are all of the men and women in town that you can date and/or marry:

  • Abigail
  • Alex
  • Elliot
  • Emily (added in Patch 1.1)
  • Haley
  • Harvey
  • Leah
  • Maru
  • Penny
  • Sam
  • Sebastian
  • Shane (added in Patch 1.1)

Alternatively, you can find out who is marriage material by going to your menu, then the third tab with the heart, and find the people that say “single” under their names. Marriage in Stardew Valley begins with dating them first. To do this, you need a total of eight (of 10) friendship hearts with them. You are allowed to date and marry anyone regardless of gender.

Hearts can be gained through giving gifts, completing requests for them, and simply chatting with them daily. You can give two gifts to each potential partner a week. Making sure to give them gifts they love or like twice a week with neither on the same day will gain you hearts pretty rapidly. At four hearts or more, you can invite someone to dance with you at the dance festival in Spring.

Stardew Valley Guide: How to Date and Marry Someone

Once you have reached eight hearts with your preferred townsperson, you will get a notification that you can now purchase a bouquet. You can purchase it for 200 gold from Pierre’s general store and give it to someone to turn them into your boyfriend or girlfriend.

Continue raising hearts to the max of 10 and then you are able to marry them. To do this, you need to give your partner a Mermaid’s Pendant. You can purchase this for 5,000 gold from the Old Mariner on the beach east of the broken bridge. You have to repair the bridge using 300 wood and wait for a rainy day to be able to purchase the Mermaid’s Pendant.

Upon giving the pendant to your partner, you will have the wedding ceremony three days after the proposal. You do have to have your house upgraded once before they will move in with you.

Stardew Valley Guide: How to Divorce Your Spouse

Sometimes love and attraction begins to fade away. You may continue playing Stardew Valley only to discover that you don’t feel the same way about your spouse as you did back in the first couple of years. Thankfully, there is the option to divorce your spouse in the game.

To do this, you must go to Mayor Lewis’ house and find a small book there. Interacting with it will give you the option to divorce your partner for 50,000 gold. Upon filing for divorce, you have until the end of the day to change your mind before it is finalized. Your ex-spouse will now have the words “ex” beneath their name and their hearts will return to zero. Any children that you two have had will remain with you at the farm.

From there, you can begin dating and marrying someone new. If you ever feel the longing for your ex-spouse, you can go to the Witch’s Hut and pay 30,000 gold for the Witch to erase their memories of your marriage to them entirely. This allows you to re-date and remarry them should you so choose.
