Dead by Daylight, the asymmetrical multiplayer game where one killer tries to brutally murder four survivors, has been out on PC for two years, and PS4 and Xbox One since June 2017. It just received its latest DLC update, bringing a killer ghost inspired by Japanese horror movies such as The Ring and The Grudge to all platforms. But is Dead by Daylight cross platform playable? Does it have cross-play multiplayer? And if not, why not?
Is Dead by Daylight Cross Platform Multiplayer Possible?
Sadly at the moment there is no cross-play for Dead by Daylight between PC, Xbox One, and PS4. You can only play with opponents on your respective platform. Likewise, game accounts function separately, so any unlocks or DLC purchases are tied to the platform you made them on. Don’t expect to buy the new Shattered Bloodline DLC, with the Spirit killer, on Steam and expect to be able to use it on PSN. It’s not going to happen.
Why is There No Cross-Play?
Far more popular games such as Fortnite can’t seem work out cross-platform play, and usually Sony is the cause as they really don’t like having cross-play between PS4 and other systems they don’t own. But what about PC and Xbox One play for Dead by Daylight? At the moment they don’t have cross-play either. There’s two possible reasons for this. The first is that mouse and keyboard controls would give players an enormous advantage over gamepad owners, which is the main reason most shooters don’t offer cross-play. However, Dead by Daylight doesn’t really require aiming, so that may not be the reason.
The other, more likely, possibility is that Behaviour Digital is a quite small, independent developer, so the team don’t have the resources to implement and maintain cross-platform multiplayer. It would probably need the support of a publisher to do it, and that isn’t likely to happen any time soon. So for now there is no cross-play for Dead by Daylight.
