Look out for the gold coins littered around the map. These are ammunition and power-ups which can do everything from fire rockets from your combine harverster to clean the screen of blood and guts.
Try to explore the whole map early on. As you move through the levels, they get bigger and more complex, and it's possible large portions of your maize will be destroyed if you don't venture away from the start.
