THINKWARE U3000 PRO Dash Cam Review

The THINKWARE U3000 PRO aims to provide high-quality vehicle capture both on the road and while parked. With 4K front recording, a 2K rear camera, and radar-based parking surveillance, it is clearly designed for drivers wanting more than basic protection. After testing it for three weeks, here is my review.

Front and rear covered

The main camera records in 4K at 30 FPS, while the rear camera captures 2K footage. Both use Sony STARVIS 2 sensors and support HDR while driving, helping when conditions get more challenging.

Daytime footage is excellent, with registration plates, signs, and surrounding vehicles clearly captured. Some competing flagship cameras I have tested can look marginally cleaner in direct comparisons, but it takes close inspection to notice. Most users aren’t going to be comparing two dash cams side by side, unless you’re a fellow reviewer, so I consider the real-world difference negligible.

It is also great to see the rear camera receive proper attention. Rear cameras can sometimes let an otherwise strong package down, but the U3000 Pro provides detailed footage in both directions.

Night performance is better than most I have tested. Motion blur makes moving registration plates more difficult to read in low light, but the overall image remains impressively clean and useful. HDR and the included CPL filter provide options to experiment with, although neither made a dramatic difference during the bright UK summer conditions in which I tested.

Watching while parked

Radar Parking Mode is the U3000 Pro’s standout feature. Radar sensors in both cameras monitor movement and wake the system when someone or something approaches. As the cameras don’t need to record continuously, power consumption is kept relatively low.

The included OBD-II cable provides a straightforward way to supply constant power and enable the parking features. Alongside Radar Parking Mode, the recording options include Motion and Impact Detection, Time Lapse, and Energy Saving. Smart Parking is a separate safeguard that switches to lower-power, impact-only monitoring if the cabin becomes too hot.

Screen or no screen?

The screenless design will divide opinion. I personally prefer seeing the camera view directly on the device, but I understand the appeal of a cleaner unit that sits discreetly behind the rear-view mirror.

Thankfully, the companion app worked well during my testing. Live view made positioning easier, while footage playback and 5 GHz downloads worked without issue.

Driver-assistance features are also included and didn’t suffer any accidental triggers during my testing. The Front Vehicle Departure Warning activated accurately and the G-sensor caused no unwanted incident recordings, even during occasional drives along country lanes.

Paying for protection

The biggest obstacle is the price. Optional LTE connectivity and its required subscription add further expense, while competing cameras can deliver similar or slightly better image quality for less.

However, the OBD-II cable, CPL filter, and 64GB microSD card are included, making this a more complete package than the headline price might initially suggest. Buyers are paying extra for the parking protection and wide feature set rather than image quality alone.
