Try to exhaust all missions in one area before moving onto the next. By that stage, you should have unlocked enough powers to stand a fighting chance.
Don't bother upgrading your magical abilities at first: focus on increasing your health or attack power.
Move around a lot. If you stay near the bottom of a level, you might miss urns and crates on higher platforms, and it's the best way to earn combo scores. The divebomb attack is particularly useful.
