Is Final Fantasy 7 Remake a PS4 Exclusive?

Final Fantasy 7 is regarded as one of the finest RPG experiences of all time. As such, it’s probably not surprising that Square Enix is pouring so much effort into the Final Fantasy 7 Remake. However, it’s plain to see that the game is heavily tied into the Sony PlayStation platform, leading fans to ask an obvious question: Is Final Fantasy 7 Remake a PS4 exclusive? As it turns out, Square Enix just recently provided a proper answer to the question.

No, the Final Fantasy 7 Remake is not a PlayStation 4 exclusive. However, it is being launched as a timed exclusive. That means the game will be available exclusively for the PS4 until March 3, 2021, at which point it will eligible to release on other platforms, namely the PC, Xbox One, or even Project Scarlett.

This new detail was revealed just recently, as Square Enix at last provided the final box art for Final Fantasy 7 Remake. As can be seen in the image below, the cover art says “PLAY FIRST ON PS4*,” with the asterisk denoting timed exclusivity until one year after the game’s PS4 release date.

Gamers on other platforms may be a bit underwhelmed to know they have to wait an additional year before playing Final Fantasy 7 Remake. However, the timed exclusivity period does at least hearken back to the original release of Final Fantasy 7 on January 31, 1997. At the time, FF7 was released as a PlayStation 1 exclusive, but would later release for Windows PCs on June 25, 1998, just about 15 months later. Of course, the game has since been ported to other platforms, notably Steam in 2013, iOS in 2015, and Android in 2016.

In other words, history seems to be repeating itself. Final Fantasy 7 Remake is not a PlayStation 4 exclusive, but it will be made available exclusively on the PS4 for one full year. After that, the game is eligible (but not guaranteed) to launch on other platforms such as PC or Xbox.
