Is Mafia 2: Definitive Edition free on consoles if you own the original?

2K Games recently announced the Mafia Trilogy, set to bring definitive versions of its three organized crime titles to PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Players that own the original Mafia 2 on Steam are lucky enough to get a free upgrade to Mafia 2: Definitive Edition, but what about those that own it on Xbox 360 or PS3? Can you be upgraded to Mafia 2: Definitive Edition free on consoles as well?

Unfortunately, owning the original Mafia 2 on PS3 or Xbox 360 does not entitle you to a free upgrade. If you want to play Mafia 2: Definitive Edition on PS4 or Xbox One, you’ll need to purchase the game again. It’s unfortunate that there isn’t parity on the offer between all platforms, though console players can at least claim a free upgrade to the original version of Mafia 3.

Is Mafia 2: Definitive Edition free on PS4 if you own the PS3 version?

No, you can’t claim a free upgrade to Mafia 2: Definitive Edition on PS4 if you own the original Mafia 2 on PS3.

Is Mafia 2: Definitive Edition free on Xbox One if you own the 360 version?

You aren’t eligible to download Mafia 2: Definitive Edition for free on Xbox One if you own Mafia 2 on Xbox 360.

The offer apparently isn’t applicable on consoles due to the generation gap. While it could be hard to verify who owns the original on PlayStation, the Xbox 360 version of Mafia 2 is backwards compatible and fully playable on Xbox One. Verifying owners on Microsoft’s platform at least seems possible as a result, though we’ll likely never know the precise reasoning behind the omission.

Mafia 2: Definitive Edition is available now for $29.99 on PS4 and Xbox One. It’s the same price on Steam, though also available free of charge to those that own the original.
